In this paper we present a historical framework on the study of Melastomataceae taxonomy in Brazil. We also present a discussion of the circumscriptions of the taxa, and of geographic distribution of the genera, as well as the impact of new tools (like molecular markers and phylogeny) on taxonomic knowledge of the family. Finally, we discuss perspectives for future studies, also indicating some gaps that must be filled in order to improve our knowledge of the diversity of Brazilian Melastomataceae. We present an identification key for the genera occurring in Brazil.

The palynological study of 21 taxa of Passiflora L. subg. Decaloba (DC.) Rchb. (Passifloraceae) in Brazil aimed to contribute to a better characterization, as well as the circumscription and delimitation of the subgenus, species and subspecies. The pollen grains were acetolysed, measured, described and illustrated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The taxa have large or medium-sized pollen grains, isopolar, prolate spheroidal, oblate spheroidal, spheroidal or suprolate, 12-colpate, 12-colporate or 6-colporate, 3 or 6 mesocolpes, and presence or absence of opercules, pseudopercules and secondary opercules, microreticulate (P. truncata) and heteroreticulate exine in the other species. An identification key with pollen characteristics is presented, showing the importance of pollen characteristics for Passiflora taxonomy.

The palynotaxonomic study of eight species Passiflora L. subg. Decaloba (DC.) Rchb. (Passifloraceae) aimed to contribute to a better characterization, as well as the circumscription and delimitation of this subgenus in Southeastern Brazil. The pollen grains were acetolysed, measured, described, and illustrated using light microscopy. For details observations of surface and aperture, pollen grains not acetolysed were analyzed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data obtained were statistically analyzed according to size of the samples. The species analysed in this study own large or mediun sizes pollen grains, isopolar, prolate spheroidal, spheroidal or subprolate, 12-colporate, 12-colpate for P. suberosa L., or 6-colporate, with pseudopercules, heteroreticulate exine. An identification key with pollinic characters is presented.

SummaryBertolonia alternifolia and B. bullata, two new endemic species of Melastomataceae from the Atlantic Forest biome of the southern region of Bahia state, Brazil, are described and illustrated based on recent botanical explorations and literature records. The main diagnostic characteristics that distinguish B. alternifolia are alternate leaves with cordate bases, and anthers with terminal-dorsal pores and unappendaged connectives. B. bullata can be identified by having leaves bullate on the adaxial surface, foveolate on the abaxial surface and bases cordate to cordate-lobate, calyx lobes with entire to slightly undulate margins, and stamens dorsally appendaged. Both species are classified as Critically Endangered (CR) and Endangered (EN) respectively.

Baccharis comprises c. 340 species occurring in the Americas. The tufted indumentum, with trichomes having a single adjoining basal cell, and florets functionally unisexual are diagnostic characters of the genus. The Rio de Janeiro state flora contains 55 species of this genus. This work presents the results of taxonomic studies of Baccharis subgen. Molina (Pers.) Heering in Rio de Janeiro state. The subgenus is represented by 18 species belonging to four sections - Caulopterae (8 spp.), Molinae (4 spp.), Baccharidastrum (3 spp.), and Trinervatae (3 spp.). A key for the identification of sections and species, plus morphological descriptions, illustrations, and comments on geographic distribution and ecology are provided. Three species are new records and five are excluded from the state checklist of species.
