Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the key features of an identity standards manual and assess the differences in the rules used for applying the brand to both low‐ and high‐context cultures, companies selling consumer goods and those selling services, and multinational and local companies.Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is based on the analysis of 341 identity standards manuals and on the analysis of three key features found in the manuals: contents, normative tone, and development.Findings – The results divide the contents of the manual into two blocks: core and peripheral; and show that there are differences between the manuals of high‐ and low‐context cultures, companies selling consumer goods and those selling services, and multinational and local companies.Research limitations/implications – Type I errors could have been introduced and the conclusions must be regarded as tentative.Practical implications – The findings show that applying the brand at an international lev...

The main objective of this study is to analyze the evolution of the research in the category ‘Mining & Mineral Processing’. First, we have revised journals that are in this subject category in the database Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) of the Web of Science (WoS). Second, we have analyzed publications for journals between 1997 and 2012, with an analysis from the perspective of both quantity and quality. To do this, we have analyzed various bibliometric indicators for different countries and research centers such as the number of documents (article and review), showing per document, productivity, the average number of citations, authors, research centers, national and international collaboration including their networks, the weighted and relative impact factor, as well as the h-index. Furthermore, we have analyzed the international dissemination of research of countries through journals and the relationship with the impact factor to detect the published journals of each country. We have also shown that English is the most common language of publication, and the United States is the most productive country, although it has a relatively low impact factor due to the dispersion of its publications in low or medium impact journals. We can also see that University of Science and Technology of Beijing and the Russian Academy of Sciences have been the most productive institutions during the period under study, along with the large increase of the Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission of France (CEA).

This article presents a comprehensive review of the stages of research when addressing the issue of historical industrial heritage from the point view of engineering graphics, looking at its influence on all stages of the value chain. It provides a contextual introduction, explaining the research, the aim pursued and the priority objectives of this type of work. It also presents the methodology and the materials used, specifying important details needed to obtain a realistic result, such as fieldwork, 3D virtual modeling, virtual reconstruction, and more usual techniques used such as augmented reality and virtual reality. Finally, the dissemination of the results and the advantages and disadvantages of the virtual reconstructions are presented.

The recent trend for large-scale replacement of luminaires using discharge light sources with LED luminaires without any significant adjustments to the electrical installation has generated controversy. This study examines the main electrical measures in a large outdoor lighting installation before and after the replacement of a large number of metal halide floodlights with LED luminaires. The electrical parameters of both technologies are discussed in detail and compared, with special attention given to the odd-numbered harmonics of voltage and current, the generated wave deformation, currents in the neutral conductor, the wattless reactive volt amps and the peak inrush currents. At cold start-up, the LED luminaires generate large power-on currents, much larger than those generated by the metal halide lamps, despite requiring 36% less real installed power. This is a basic problem to be solved when planning a public lighting renovation with LED luminaires as the rest of electrical parameters are reduced. To address this problem, it is proposed to energise the luminaires using magneto-thermal protection circuits with slow trip curves that will tolerate the large short-term inrush currents.

This article presents a novel educational software package which develops an Interactive Didactic Application(IDA) generated in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia(UPC), and which contains the essentials of Engineering Graphics according to ISO norms. It is an interactive multimedia application which adapts easily to all engineering studies, according to the needs of each course, and which is the nucleus of Computer Assisted Teaching(CAT).

This paper describes the technical development of a 3D computer simulation model as a reconstruction of a fulling mill. Details of the fulling mill and its operation are presented, and innovative technical developments to accurately convert existing data (technical drawings, CAD models, etc) into a 3D model are described. Preliminary evaluation of the usefulness of the model as an aid to support the undergraduate teaching module are also presented.

This article makes an analysis of 21 “authored wineries” which combine the most advanced winemaking techniques in the production of quality wines with impressive architectural images which give added value to the brand. A comparison is made between European countries and new wine-producing countries. It takes into account two types of characteristic: functional (type and number of floors, pumping, aging area and hygrothermic conditioning) and formal (materials used in the facade covering and roof structure). The functional similarities found are a prevalence of a rectangular plant shape with two floors, mixed pumping and aging area on the ground floor. From a formal point of view, there is a diversity of materials used to cover facades and the use of wood as an element to differentiate from other industrial buildings. The main functional differences are the more widespread use of two-storey wineries in Europe, and a variety in aging areas, and a larger number of wineries with dug out underground aging areas, which leads to natural and mixed hygrothermal conditioning being more widespread in Europe than in new wine-producing countries. In terms of formal characteristics, in Europe there is a more widespread use of concrete as a facade covering, in contrast to stone and metal panels which are more common in other areas.

This article presents a novel educational software package which develops an Interactive Didactic Application(IDA) created by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia(UPC), and which contains the essentials of textile design. It is an open application which uses a database in ASCII format. The principal elements of this database are lists of whole numbers structured according to indexed colors in standard RGB format. This generates a rational system of indexes of numerical lists, which allows us to transmit knowledge in the different areas, which use images in their processes, with application in textile design, engineering graphics, mathematical transformations or indexation logic, among others.

In this paper, the geometric modeling and virtual reconstruction of the double-acting steam engine designed by Agustín de Betancourt in 1789 are shown. For this, the software Autodesk Inventor Professional is used, which has allowed us to obtain its geometric documentation. The material for the research is available on the website of the Betancourt Project of the Canary Orotava Foundation for the History of Science. Almost all parts of the steam engine are drawn on the sheets, but due to the absence of scale and space, it is insufficient to obtain an accurate and reliable 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model. For this reason a graphic scale has been adopted so that the dimensions of the elements are coherent. Also, it has been necessary to make some dimensional and geometric hypotheses, as well as restrictions of movement (degrees of freedom). Geometric modeling has made it possible to know that the system is balanced with the geometric center of the rocker arm shaft, and presents an energetic symmetry whose axis is the support of the parallelogram where the shaft rests: calorific energy to the left and mechanical energy to the right, with the rocker arm acting as a transforming element from one to the other.
