The process was evaluated through a study case in which an application of e-learning was adapted to a digital television environment. With the proposed process a guide with defined activities has been created which allow to systematically adapting the applications of t-learning in the TDi context. This implies that the contents of t-learning can be enriched in a quicker manner.

The emergence of social activities on the Internet in conjunction with the popularization of multimedia services has facilitated the development of collaborative services for Social TV. Interactive services with multimedia contents are critical because of the high consumption of resources in the communication networks. For this reason, interactive games for the Social TV pose an important test in order to evaluate the performance of these collaborative services over IP-based networks. We have designed a multiuser interactive game based on answering questions with bidirectional data, audio and video. The traffic generated has been analyzed, statistically characterized and used to develop and validate a simulation model of the online game. Results of the simulation demonstrate the accuracy of the designed model and the high consumption of network resources of the service in massive deployments with a high number of active users. The proposed model can be used to evaluate both service performance, and resources consumption in heterogeneous networks, with different policies of content distribution in massive deployments of the online game service. The integration of the simulation model with the real TV service will also allow us to evaluate the quality of experience of the users in hybrid scenarios of emulation.

Transport companies are probably one of the greatest sources of pollution nowadays. Perhaps because these companies would like to improve this situation, or perhaps because they simply would like to reduce the petrol they consume, they are more than ever deploying plans in order to increase the efficiency of their fleets. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to achieve this is to teach their drivers how to be more efficient. Nevertheless, traditional learning approaches were only successful in the short term, according to the previous work. In order to achieve long-term results, new learning paradigms must be taken into account. Furthermore, if we combine these paradigms with a learning analytics system, optimal results may be reached for both the company and the drivers. In this paper, we present a learning analytics system applied to the efficient driving context. This learning analytics system is used as a fundamental piece in the deployment of the blended learning methodology for efficient professional driving designed by our research group. We describe the design and the integration of this system with a real product currently being used in many transport fleets. With a technical approach, we also describe the main problems found during the deployment of this system and the solutions designed to cope with these problems.

In this paper software architecture scheme for supporting of virtual academic communities (CAV) in the context of the interactive digital television, is proposed and analyzed. The proposed architecture extends services defined until now within the e-learning environment, introducing concepts and applications of Web 2.0 through the consumption of the REST-JSON service scheme The scenarios supported by the architecture, the components and their interoperability that allow providing interactivity to different services in an environment of digital television, and the progress of its implementation in the laboratory, are described. In addition, two other services supported and deployed on the architecture are discussed: a message board and a chat room. The ability of the architecture to support flexible services, which can be associated or not to multimedia content of the CAV, is shown. This allows better management and efficient use of the return channel.

In this paper, the analysis, statistical characterization and modeling of a video on demand (VoD) service running on a cable network HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coaxial) is presented. Audio and video services produce a high consumption of resources on the network infrastructure. Thus, it is necessary to perform detailed studies that allow evaluating the impact of implementing these services and their effect on other services running on the same network. The audio and video service uses the RTMP protocol for multimedia traffic transmission between clients and server. With the objective of evaluating the service performance on cable network, several scenarios with different configurations of the media access control protocol in HFC networks have been analyzed.

Currently, 4G mobile communication systems are supported by the 3GPP standard. In view of the significant increase in mobile data traffic, it is necessary to characterize it to improve the performance of current wireless networks. Indeed, video transmission and video streaming are fundamental assets for the upcoming smart cities and urban environments. Due to the high costs of deploying a real LTE system, emulation systems that consider real operating conditions emerge as a successful alternative. On the other hand, many studies with LTE simulations and emulations do not present information of basic adjustment parameters like the propagation model, nor of validation of the results with real conditions. This paper shows the validation with an ANOVA statistical analysis of an LTE emulation system developed in NS-3 for the live video streaming service. For the validation, different QoS parameters and real conditions have been used. Also, two protocols, namely RTMP and RTSP, have been tested. It is demonstrated that the emulation scenario is appropriate to characterize the traffic that will later allow to carry out a proper performance analysis of the service and technology under study.

Video streaming is a technology that has had a great reception with internet users, and it has been integrated many platforms in different contexts like the educational one. For the video streaming distribution, the architectures use specialized protocols that manage the video transmission on the internet. In contrast, there are other alternatives proposed that allow streaming over the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP). This paper proposes two streaming architectures using open source software for the distribution of Video on Demand (VoD) and live services over the HTTP. The distribution of live video is done with the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) standard. Through web components, video streaming is visualized from a web browser with the goal to build a virtual environment for the broadcast of educational material. These architectures are validated through a video streaming service deployment over the University of Quindio network using a case study within the educational context.

The use of linguistic terms enables teachers carry out the educational competencies assessment in a natural and significant way. However, the competency maps assessment may be an imprecise task because teachers have to consider a large amount of linguistic information, which describes relationships among elements (i.e., competencies and assessment activities), weights of such relationships and proficiency levels attained by students. In order to address this issue, this work proposes a fuzzy approach for assessing competencies based on the structure and features of the competency maps by using the 2-tuples model. In order to assess the effectiveness and the efficiency in terms of runtime of the proposal, in this work a prototype has been developed and tested using real data provided by teachers, achieving successful results. This approach intends to provide a guide to implement services for assessing educational competencies.

Interactive Digital Television (iDTV) provides a large amount of educational programs useful for supporting students’ learning and teaching processes. Nevertheless, despite the continuous growth of the number of available contents, it is hard to find those which can be useful for a specific educational purpose. In order to provide a solution to this issue, in this paper we propose a model of a semantic Recommender System for educational iDTV programs, in which, the concept of competency and its features have been integrated as contextual information to enhance both the user and program information. Thus, we can establish filtering strategies in accordance with educational requirements. Furthermore, this proposal incorporates ontology-based filtering to enhance the inference capacity of another approaches, such as, content-based, collaborative, and syntactic matching.

This paper presents an analysis of the most relevant metadata schemas for marking up educational content found on the Web: LOM, MLR, LRMI, DC-Ed AP and EdNA. The results of this analysis are summarized in a plot that relates the different schemes and in a table in which the main characteristic are compared. LOM is the standard of metadata with the highest impact on e-learning and continue being used. However, the great amount of application profiles that have been implemented, gives an indication about its incapacity of supporting the needs of different educational contexts. It is also found that MLR and LRMI are the current standards that introduce educational elements absent in older schemas.
