Abstract The preparation and X-ray crystal structure of the complex formed between 6-amino-1,3-dimethyl- 5-phenylazouracil (DZH) and gold(I) chloride, [DZH2] [AuCl2]· 1.5H2O, are described. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic system: space group C2/c, a = 17.865(4), b = 16.333(3), c = 14.014(2) A, β = 118.59(1)°, Z = 8, R = 0.049. The structure is ionic and consists of AuCl2− anions, DZH+ cations and crystal water molecules bonded together by hydrogen bonds. The anion AuCl2− is almost linear [ClAuCl = 179.1(1)°], with AuCl distances of 2.245(3) and 2.255(4) A. The cation is essentially co-planar and the protonation takes place at the nitrogen atom N(10) of the azo group bonded to the phenyl ring. Likewise, three gold(III) complexes of type AuLCl2 were prepared from NaAuCl4·2H2O and 6-amino-l,3-dimethyl-5-arylazouracil derivatives (LH). A cis-square-planar structure is proposed for these complexes on the basis of IR data. Tests of the isolated gold(I) and gold(III) complexes for their growth inhibition of HeLa cells showed considerable inhibition for the compounds [DZH2][AuCl2]· 1.5H2O, Au(DZ)Cl2 and Au(DZC)Cl2.

Abstract The preparation of a series of gold(I) compounds of general formulae (LH2)(AuBr2) and (LH2)2- (AuBr2)Br (LH2+: 5-arylazoniumuracil cations) is described. The crystal structure of (DZH2)2(AuBr2)- Br·H2O (DZH2+ 6-amino-1,3-dimethyl-5-phenylazoniumuracil cation) was determined. The crystals are triclinic; space group P 1 ; a=12.188(1), b = 17.404(2), c = 7.764(1) A, α = 99.79(1), β = 99.45(1), γ = 86.94(1)°; Z = 2; R = 0.030 for 3593 observed reflections and 310 variable parameters. The structure is ionic, the asymmetric unit contains one AuBr2− anion, two crystallographically independent DZH2+ cations, one isolated Br− anion and one molecule of water of crystallization. In each DZH cation the additional proton is bonded to a nitrogen atom of the azo group. The growth inhibition of HeLa cells by these bromogold(I) salts has been tested.
