Public e-procurement and the duality of technology: a comparative study in the context of Brazil and of the state of Paraíba

Flavio Perazzo Barbosa Mota; José Rodrigues Filho

In this study, an attempt was made to understand the e-procurement theme from the perspective of the duality of technology, understanding it both as a product and as a means for human actions, which, interacting with institutional properties, produces and reproduces the current organizational practices. From the multiple interpretative case studies conducted, it was evidenced that e-procurement is a subjective element, sometimes understood inconsistently by human agents in the different organizational contexts studied (Brazil and the State of Paraiba). Users appropriate the rules, knowledge, and assumptions incorporated into the implemented system to perform tasks, contributing to a reaffirmation of the status quo.

Determinantes de utilização do cuidado pré-natal entre famílias de baixa renda no Estado da Paraíba, Brasil

José Rodrigues Filho; Walfredo da Costa; Glaucia Maria de Luna leno

The determinants of prenatal care in the state of Paraiba, Brazil, are examined. A population of 769 rural and urban women resident in the municipality of Caapora and who had had a child within the five years immediatly preceding the survey were interviewed. It was found that there are deficiencies in the provision of health services, especially in the rural area. While 80 percent of the women resident in the urban area had some prenatal care, more than 40 percent of women in the rural area had received no prenatal care at all. Through cross tabulations and multivariate analysis, the study assesses the diferentials in the utilization or services and the net effect of socio-demographic variables on the use of prenatal care. It was found that there is a positive association between education and preganancy of use of prenatal care and a negative association between rural residence and the use of prenatal care.

Information Systems (IS) is a field of study concerned with a large range of multifaceted issues regarding the development, use and implications of information and communication technologies in organizations. It is a recent field of study, yet not well understood by academics and professionals of other areas, even in the fields related to IS such as management and operational research. In this work written for academics and professional, an attempt is made to present some thematic areas of IS, theoretical foundations and some methodological and institutional characteristics. Information Systems is a fragmented field that does not use the methodological rigor usually associated with other scientific disciplines, but has given origin to an impressive wealth of knowledge in the organizational level.

In this study Ucides cordatus crab shells were utilized as Fe (II) sorbent as material of low cost and simple preparation. Values of pH of standard solution, biosorbent mass, particles size, contact time (tc) and initial concentration of the standard solution were optimized. The best conditions were pH = 2.00, tc = 840 min and Mc = 0.25 g. The kinetic pseudo first-order model displayed the best description of the adsorption process and the equilibrium study showed that the Langmuir model better describes the adsorption of the Fe (II). There is great affinity between the Fe (II) and the biosorbent.

Sistema de Classificaçäo de Pacientes - parte II: custo de enfermagem

José Rodrigues Filho

Determining the cost of providing nursing care to hospital patients is a major concern for nursing administrators, especially in developed countries. It is stressed that the costing-out of nursing service is generally viewed as advantageous for the nursing profession. Three basic methods for allocating hospital nursing service costs are described. The first is a per day service method (per diem) that relates nursing costs directly to length of stay. The second method, the relative intensity measures, tries to relate patients condition (use) of nursing resources to his medical condition. The third alternative to costing nursing is based on patient classification system, which measure patient requirements or nursing workload.: Determining the cost of providing nursing care to hospital patients is a major concern for nursing administrators, especially in developed countries.
