PURPOSE: Evaluating the hearing accomplishment over time and to investigate the prognostic factors related. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study carried out through analysis the medical records of 57 patients with post-lingual hearing loss and cochlear implant for at least 12 months. To sustain our method we applied the Kaplan-Meier method and the logrank test for analysis of speech perception over time and the possible influence of factors such as gender, education, duration of hearing loss, age at implantation, etiology and devices brand, on the outcome studied. RESULTS: In only 12 months after implant activation, more than half of the cohort already had satisfactory scores on the test of speech perception. The logrank test had not indicated difference among the covariates tested. There was a significant difference between the hearing results pre and post cochlear implant. CONCLUSION: The hearing performance after 12 months using the IC exceeds the criterion for the majority of individuals with post-lingual hearing loss, regardless of prognostic factors evaluated, but not all respondents.

Corresponding address: Joseli Soares Brazorotto Rua Monsenhor Severiano, 547, apto 801, Petrópolis CEP: 59020-080 – Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the facilitators and barriers to the use of the FM System in school-age children with hearing loss. Methods: a cross-sectional, observational and documentary study. Data from the children’s charts and responses of their 30 teachers to a questionnaire were used in the descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The questions were related to the use of the FM System by the child and the preparation of the teachers to use the resource. Results: out of the 30 children whose teachers answered the survey, only nine used the FM System in the classroom. Factors such as age, parents’ schooling and their participation in speech therapy, as well as the teacher’s knowledge about the FM System and their experience with hard of hearing children were shown to be facilitators for the use of the device as well as the consistent use of the hearing devices (hearing aids and/or cochlear implant). Conclusion: the main facilitator for the use of the FM System was the teacher’s knowledge about it. Considering the importance of the use of this resource for the mainstream education of children with hearing loss, a multi-centric research is desirable for the determination of protocols to follow the adaptation and training of the school community.

Intervenção guiada por videofeedback a famílias de crianças com deficiência auditiva

Ingrid Rafaella Dantas dos Santos; Joseli Soares Brazorotto

In order to improve speech-language development in children with hearing impairment, in addition to speech-language therapy, the family should be the modifying agent for a satisfactory therapeutic response. Studies that analyze the effectiveness of speech-language pathology (SLP) intervention programs through video feedback are important, given the positive effects of this tool on the modification of behaviors with families of children with disabilities. Therefore, it is believed that video feedback interventions contribute improve the communicative interactions between the families and children assisted by auditory rehabilitation services. The objectives of this study were to investigate the interaction between families and children with hearing loss and analyze the self-esteem and satisfaction of families before and after the intervention program. This is a non-randomized, clinical trial with case report in two groups: Experimental (n=5) and Control (n=5). The intervention was supported by family-child interaction videos and adapted instruments. Pre- and post-intervention protocols were applied. In the EG, improvement was observed in the interaction between the families and children with hearing loss and in the self-esteem of participants. The EG showed satisfaction with the intervention. We conclude that the SLP intervention program based on video feedback has positive effects on the family/child interaction and on parent self-esteem. Further studies with stricter methodological controls should be conducted to prove the efficacy of video feedback intervention for families of children with hearing loss.
