A solid-state controlled ballast is described that utilized a custom integrated circuit to provide lamp current and power regulation. The ballast provides a total energy savings over the life of a lamp of 40 percent, the combined result of improved lamp power regulation, lower ballast losses, and part-of-night dimming.
