Laboratory testing of pharmaceutical agents for possible tumorigenic activity plays a crucial role in the identification of cancer risks associated with the use of such agents. Comprehensive testing of an agent is ordinarily not feasible and, instead, standard designs of a limited nature are routinely employed. Recurrent problems arise in connection with such routine assays. We suggest that the frequency of such problems can be reduced by minor changes in the specifications for the conduct of cancer assays.
