Glutathione depletion by hyperphagia-induced obesity

Juan Sastre; Federico V. Pallardó; Juan Alberto Sanchis Llopis; Tadayasu Furukawa; Juan R. Viña; Jose Viña

Reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in freeze-clamped livers of rats and mice in which hyperphagia is induced by cafeteria diet are 45% lower than in controls. Freshly isolated hepatocytes from mice fed cafeteria diet show a 45% decrease in GSH concentration and a 54% decrease in oxidized glutathione (GSSG) concentration when compared with controls. The rate of GSH synthesis in isolated hepatocytes from control mice is significantly higher than in those from mice fed cafeteria diet. Oral GSH is effective to prevent the decrease in hepatic GSH levels found in cafeteria fed mice.

Export intensity and the productivity gains of exporting

Miguel C. Manjón Antolín; Juan A. Mañez; María Engracia Rochina Barrachina; Juan Alberto Sanchis Llopis

This article analyses whether the productivity gains associated with Learning-by-Exporting (LBE) (controlling for self-selection) depend on the intensity of the firms exporting activity. The results from a representative sample of Spanish manufacturing firms indicate that the yearly average gains in productivity are larger for those firms that increase their export-to-sales ratio.

The possible hepatotoxic effects of halogenated anesthetics has been the subject of many papers in recent years. The findings must be interpreted cautiously because a whole constellation of factors may contribute to hepatotoxicity after anesthesia, as pointed out by McLaughlin and Eger [1].
