Hemodynamic effects of synchronous arterio-arterial pumping after experimental myocardial infarction.

Robert F.P. Cronin; Juan B. Calatayud

Abstract 1. 1. Ten dogs were subjected to synchronous arterio-arterial pumping for 30 min. periods. Five of the animals had previously undergone ligation of the anterior descending coronary artery; the remaining animals acted as controls. 2. 2. Synchronous arterio-arterial pumping was effective in reducing the left ventricular stroke work 22 per cent in the group with infarction and 32 per cent in the control group without significant alteration in cardiac output, heart rate or mean blood pressure. 3. 3. It is concluded that this represents the maximal reduction in ventricular work which can be obtained when employing cannulation of the distal aorta.

Patient Surveillance by Computer

Howard M. Hochberg; James W. McAllister; Juan B. Calatayud; Patricia Russell; Cesar A. Caceres

The constant monitoring of patients in the operating room, recovery room, intensive care unit, and coronary care unit has become commonplace. With presently available nursing staff it is impossible to do a complete job in all these locations. For instance, i f all the patients who need the surveillance available in Coronary Care Units received it, one-sixth of the nurses in the United States would be needed for that purpose. Constant monitoring in the CCU and other locations has become the new standard of care. More
