A methodology for improving landslide PSI data analysis

In this work, we present a methodology for improving persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) data analysis for landslide studies. This methodology is a revision of previously described procedures with several improved and newly proposed aspects. To both evaluate and validate the results from this methodology, we used various persistent scatterer (PS) datasets from different satellites (ERS – ENVISAT, Radarsat, TerraSAR-X, and ALOS PALSAR) that were processed using three PSI techniques (stable point network – SPN, permanent scatterer interferometry – PSInSAR™, and SqueeSAR™) to map and monitor landslides in various mountainous environments in Spain and Italy. This methodology consists of a preprocessing model that predicts the presence of a PS over a certain area and a post-processing method used to determine the stability threshold, project the line of sight (LOS) velocity along the slope, estimate the E–W and vertical components of the velocity, and identify anomalous areas.

Exposure to hazards is expected to increase in Europe, due to rapid population growth in urban areas and the escalation of urbanization throughout many countries. In the framework of the European Geological Surveys (EGS), the Earth Observation and Geohazards Expert Group (EOEG) has carried out a survey based enquiry regarding the integration of geohazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, ground subsidence, floods and others) into urban and land-use planning. Responses from 19 European countries and 5 regions reveal heterogeneous policies across national borders. 17% of the countries have not yet implemented any legal measures to integrate geohazards into urban and land-use plans and half of the participating countries have no official methodological guides to construct geohazard maps. Additionally, there is a scarce knowledge about real social impacts of geohazards and resulting disasters in many of the countries, although they have a significant impact on their national economies. This overview stresses the need for a common legislative framework and homogenization of the national legislations as well as mutual guidelines which adopt the principles applicable to the management of geohazards and explain the process to be followed in the production of hazard documentation. This is especially relevant in case of landslide and subsidence hazards; although those are of great importance in Europe, there are no common guidelines and practices similar to Directive 2007/60/EC on the assessment and management of flood risk. Based on their expertise, EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) have the potential to coordinate this activity in European geohazard guidelines and to promote the interaction among stakeholders.

3D Stability Analysis of the Portalet Landslide Using Finite Element Method

Slow landslide deformation evolution is generally cast using 1D or 2D numerical models. This paper aims to explore 3D effects on the kinematic behavior of the Portalet landslide, which is located in Central Spanish Pyrenees. This is a very well characterized and documented active paleo-landslide that has been reactivated by the construction of a parking area at the toe of the slope. A 3D finite element model is built from interpreted profiles and a stability analysis is performed computing factors of safety (Fs) in the initial and excavated configurations using the shear-strength-reduction (SSR) technique.

Using Modern Sensor Data and Advanced Numerical Modelling for Slow Landslides Motion Forecasting

This paper compares three different numerical models to reproduce the kinematic behaviour of large slow landslides. After a careful calibration using different monitoring techniques and modern sensor data, the proposed models can give successful short-term and medium-term predictions during stages of primary and secondary creep, i.e. at nearly constant strain rate. Long-time predictions remain uncertain, stability depends strongly on the position of the water table depth and new failures during tertiary creep due to soil temporal micro-structural degradation are difficult to calibrate.
