Collaborative firms managing perishable products in a complex supply network: an empirical analysis of performance

Juan Carlos Pérez Mesa; Emilio Galdeano-Gómez

Purpose – This purpose of this study is to provide empirical evidence of how cooperation is related to suppliers’ performance, a relationship that is thought to be affected by the type of customer and the extent to which the market is diversified. It analyzes horticultural exporting firms in southeastern Spain, which are the main suppliers of European markets. Together with their primary customers (large-scale retail companies such as Carrefour, Tesco and Aldi), these firms constitute a complex supply network composed of a variety of agents and sales channels. This network will be studied from the perspective of the supplier–supplier relationship that is critical to their survival. Design/methodology/approach – Starting with a detailed description of Europe’s vegetable supply chain, a hierarchical regression is used with an index of cooperation intensity, moderated by retail sales and market concentration. The authors test the hypotheses using panel data on a set of 118 horticultural marketing firms in so...

The Spanish Tomato Export Sector of the Almeria Region: An Econometric Approach

Jaime de Pablo Valenciano; Juan Carlos Pérez Mesa; Jean Pierre Lévy Mangin

This article analyzes the current situation of the tomato export sector of Almeria, the principal exporting province of Spain. First, a critical view is presented relating to the internal organization of this sector; the most important problem observed is the marketing system which is atomized, heterogeneous and significantly difficult for raising funds from the individual partners in order to begin innovative projects. Second, to establish whether this area is losing market share, the sector is compared to the other principal tomato suppliers of the European Union (the Netherlands, Morocco, and other areas of Spain). The analysis shows Almeria has defended its market share in the most recent years. Finally, the most influential variables in the commercial process are analyzed by a tomato export model that shows there are substitution effects of the Almerian tomato for products from others origins, mostly the Netherlands.

Value of intermediation in the Spanish tourist supply chain

Juan Carlos Pérez Mesa; Emilio Galdeano Gómez; Garcia Barranco

Supply-chain management in tourism requires the collaboration and coordination of all companies involved in the production and marketing of tourist products. In order to study the direct and indirect relationships among members of the supply chain, this paper presents an input–output model whose results show the need for balance between direct and intermediated sales, on the one hand, and how individual strategies may impair the benefits of the whole chain, on the other. Additionally, although the producers are the most important agents in terms of turnover, when considering the joint effects of purchases and sales, intermediaries are seen to be the key enterprises of the supply network.
