Linking logistics to strategy in Argentina

Octavio Carranza; Arnold Maltz; Juan Pablo Antún

Qualitative results of a benchmarking process in logistics areas between companies operating in Argentina are presented. A description of the main logistics processes reengineered by these companies is done and some inferences are taken from the study. The companies are finally analyzed according to another benchmarking process generated in Michigan State University, which leads to a discussion on how companies can be characterized as world class in emerging countries.

Urban Hazmats Line-Haul, Distribution and Modal Change: Case Studies from Mexico

Angélica Lozano; Ángeles Muñoz; Luis Macías; Juan Pablo Antún

This paper analyzes urban hazmats transportation within very congested and populated urban zones in Mexico. Three case studies are presented: chlorine line-haul transportation within the metropolitan zone of Mexico City (MZMC), gasoline physical distribution within a subzone of the MZMC, and a real accident happened during a modal change of trichloro-s-triazinetrione at the Port of Veracruz City.

LOGISTICS OPERATORS FOR PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION OF GOODS IN MEXICO CITY : A STRATEGY FOR MITIGATING EMISSIONS

Juan Pablo Antún; Marina Mallorquin; Ivette Toledo; Sonia Briceño

The National Institute of Ecology (INE) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) entrusted the Laboratorio de Transporte y Sistemas Territoriales of the Instituto de Ingenieria, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, with studying logistics strategies aimed at changing the structures of demand management for goods transport in Mexico City, and at diminution of greenhouse effect emissions. The current study is aimed at: (1) analysing logistic practices of large distributors; (2) assessing the level of use suppliers cross-docking centres; (3) measuring energy savings and pollutant emission diminution for distribution operations using groupage system; and (4) drawing up strategic recommendations for managing goods transport demand with specific incentives. The paper presents the first results obtained: (1) comparative analysis of logistic practices for supermarkets; (2) the state of the art for leading logistic operators (strategic alliances with distributions companies and suppliers); and (3) quantitative assessment of mitigated emission levels after a number of case studies from various metropolitan scenarios as a function of the use level of logistic distribution operators (cross-docking, storing and pick & pack system).

CREATION OF EMPLOYMENT, TERRITORIAL DISTRIBUTION AND ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION: MULTIPLE CRITERION FOR THE SHORT TERM PROGRAMMING OF INDUSTRIAL ESTATES

Juan Pablo Antún

Abstract In developing countries the aim of industrialization strategies is to improve the quality of life of the population: the creation of jobs, the development of human resources, technological innovation (including the so-called adequate technologies), protection of the environment and better distribution of wealth. Industrial estates are one of the tools most often employed in these strategies. An industrial estate is an area urbanized for the exclusive use of industries and related services (businesses, warehouses, eating facilities for workers, sports areas), and whose encompassing space is subject to regulations on land use (at times there is provision made for housing of social interest.) Here we present a multicriterion algorithm for the short term programming of feasible industrial estates projects, based on a concordance/discordance analysis and in certain experiences in decision-making on land use. There is employed a multiple criterion for evaluation: the creation of employment, the territorial distribution and the environment protection
