Secrecy and Deceit: The Religion of the Crypto-Jews (review)

Judith Laikin Elkin

But the second form (laica) did not involve the transfer of the property to the juzgados. The collateral remained under the control of lay trustees who had the obligation of providing the specified annuity for the chaplain. The Churchs involvement consisted of making certain that the designated chaplain designated, and the masses required, were said. Since one chart (p. 83) suggests that nearly 85 percent of initial chaplains were not priests, the two issues were indeed separate, and one can see serious family strategies involved in retaining control of the property. She suggests that many capellanfas supported minors and students, and trustees paid for substitutes to say the masses, at a much cheaper rate than that nominally indicated in the donation.
