In this paper we describe a novel interaction method for interacting with mobile devices without the need to access a keypad or a display. A tap with a hand can be reliably detected e.g. through a pocket by means of an acceleration sensor. By carefully designing the user interface, the tap can be used to activate logically similar functionalities on the device, leading to a simple but useful interaction method. We present results of user tests aimed at studying the usability of various tap input based user interface applications.

This paper describes an experimental setup and results of user tests focusing on the perception of temporal characteristics of vibration of a mobile device. The experiment consisted of six vibration stimuli of different length. We asked the subjects to score the subjective perception level in a five point Lickert scale. The results suggest that the optimal duration of the control signal should be between 50 and 200 ms in this specific case. Longer durations were perceived as being irritating.

This study addresses the issue of how to aid adoption of new interaction means for mobile devices. The research problem is how to promote and guide the use of new movement interaction modalities to a novice user, who has no prior knowledge of gesture control. The aim was to create a pleasurable experience that invites users to learn how mobile device movement control works. The main contribution is an interaction tutorial application that combines gesture control with a physical visual tangible object in a mobile device, demonstrating interaction elements that are potentially applicable in future mobile devices.
