This article applies the Betty Neuman Stressor Model, typically used in nursing education to explain illness causation of the patient, to educating healthcare workers on workplace stressors (i.e., hazards). Prevention strategies for dealing with workplace hazards are discussed in terms of bolstering flexible lines of defense or lines of resistance as described by this stressor model. Key hazards to include in a healthcare safety curriculum or in workplace safety training are provided.

for dealing with this issue. For example, in the chapter “Successful Aging” the author comments that “understanding the difference between ‘normal’ and ’abnormal’ changes in the elderly is crucial” (p. 11). He then lists these differences for our information. Next, he discusses and explains the many antiaging products on the market and concludes that none of them have proven scientific efficacy at this time. He confirms that the most effective antiaging intervention is regular exercise and proper diet based on the USDA food pyramid. This is the format for each chapter, which address such topics as “Behavioral Disorders,” “Anxiety Disorders,” and “Sleep Disorders” to name a few. In the chapter on “Psychotherapy With Geriatric Clients,” the author discusses the unique problems that exist in this area and the different therapies that have proven to be effective, quoting case studies to make his point. This, obviously, is not a book to be read from cover to cover, but rather is an excellent reference book to utilize when seeking information on a specific problem. Not only will it be of value to those who are directly involved in the delivery of health care to the elderly, but it will also be of value to anyone serving on a board or committee or in any support group dealing with these issues. In fact, it would be of great value to anyone who just wants to be better informed in this area, since with the increase in this population and the rising cost of health care, geriatric psychiatry is an issue that will affect all of us. Having access to this information will enable us to be better advocates for the improvements that are so desperately needed in this area of health care. Geriatric Psychiatry Basics would be a handy resource to have on your bookshelf, right next to your Physicians Desk Reference.
