Objective: To analyze, using a literature review, Pulmonary Rehabilitation (RP) Programs in lung transplant. Methods: A literature review in July 2014 in Ebsco Host, Periodicos Capes, BVS and Science Direct data bases using descriptors in English (“lung transplantation”, “lung transplant” AND/OR “rehabilitation”) and Portuguese (“reabilitacao” AND/OR “transplante pulmonar”). The eligibility criterions were interventional studies of PR before and/or after lung transplant; participants who were candidates to lung transplant or lung transplant recipients; studies that applied any kind of PR program (hospital-based, homebased or outpatient) and articles published in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Literature reviews, guidelines and case reports were excluded. The search process yielded 46 articles of which two were duplicated. After title and abstract screening 13 articles remained for full text reading. Six studies met the inclusion eligibility and were included in the review. Results: The studies involved patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, Interstitial Lung Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis. Pulmonary function, exercise capacity, quality of life (QoL) and quadriceps force were evaluated. Most interventions were outpatient programs with three months duration, three times a week and session with at least one hour. Protocols included physical training, educational approach and just one included nutritional, psychiatric and social assistant follow-up. The studies presented significant change in the six-minute walking distance, QoL and quadriceps force after PR programs. Conclusion: This review showed the benefits of the PR in the QoL and exercise capacity contributing to the Health Promotion of the patients. The Kangaroo mother method is a relative low cost program in which the mother is the main source of care and heat necessaries for the survival of the premature. The newborn is positioned between her breasts, pulling her to the front, which may turn her propense to developing pains. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of pain in mothers that applied the referred method and to measure it by means of an analogical scale. This quantitative and descriptive study was carried out in two public maternities of Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil, in the period of July to November, 2003. The sample consisted of 15 mothers interned at the “Kangaroo” infirmaries, to who were applied two questionnaires: one at entering the hospital and other at least five days later. The data were analyzed through mean and standard deviation. Five (33%) of the studied mothers presented some pain process after the internment. From those, all referred that the pain was located in the thoracic region and shoulders, and three (55%) of the mothers who previously presented some pain said that it increased after beginning to apply the method. The results suggest that the posture adopted in the Kangaroo mother method requires a lot from the superior trunk muscles, region where the baby is positioned, and from the muscles that support the weight of the breasts, therefore consisting in a causing or aggravating factor of pain in the spinal column

The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious, disabling disease, presenting the pulmonary function test with abnormalities in the expiratory flow. Under this denomination, it comprises the chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. The hydrotherapy involves the physical therapy with aquatic exercises and has being used because it is a pleasant activity with positive results. The aim of this exploratory study was to compare the performance of the patients with COPD treated with hydrotherapy associated to pulmonary rehabilitation with those treated only with pulmonary rehabilitation, being held in the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center of Messejana Hospital, in Fortaleza - Ceara. The sample consisted of 10 patients, independently of sex and age, randomly divided into two groups. The evaluation instrument was the upper limbs incremental test observing the following parameters: the cardiac frequency (FC), the respiratory frequency (f), the degree of dyspnea, the tiredness of the upper limbs, the maximum burden reached and the oxygen saturation (SatO2). The parameters FC (p=0.04), f (p=0.046) e SatO2 (p=0.008) presented an average improvement of 33.33% above those of the patients that were just in the pulmonary rehabilitation. The other evaluated parameters also presented positive results, but with p>0.05. In conclusion, the results obtained with the pulmonary rehabilitation associated to the hydrotherapy overcome those found just with the pulmonary rehabilitation treatment, allowing an increase in the physical conditioning and improvement in the functional activities; although, due to the reduced number of cases, new researches should be held to confirm this exploratory study.

Objectives: To determine the impact that fibromyalgia (FM) has on quality of life; to compare the quality of life of patients with fibromyalgia with the healthy Spanish population and to know the correlation and sensibility of two instruments of quality of life in FM. Method: A cross-sectional and observational study. Twenty-seven subjects joined in (25 women and 2 men) with a mean age of 50.5 years (SD 7.9), belonging to the Salmantina Association of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. The Spanish versions of the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and the the Short-Form 36 (SF36) were used to study quality of life. Results: High scores were obtained in the “Energy”, “Pain”, “Sleep” and “Physical mobility” dimensions of the NHP and low scores in the “Physical problems”, “Pain”, “Vitality” and “General health perception” dimensions of the SF-36. Statistical significant differences were found in all dimensions comparing to the healthy Spanish population. The following dimensions were negatively statistically correlated: “Energy”(NHP)-“Vitality” (SF-36); “Pain”(NHP)- “Physical function”, “Pain and Vitality” (SF-36); “Physical mobility” (NHP)-“Physical function and Physical problems” (SF-36); “Emotional reactions” (NHP)- “Mental health”, “Emotional problems” and “General health” (SF-36). The SF-36 is more sensitive than the NHP to evaluate the deterioration of the fibromyalgia. Conclusions: The fibromyalgia produces a significant deterioration in quality of life that can be assessed by the dimensions of the NHP and the SF-36.
