Tooth Erosion with Low Severity Does Not Impact Child Oral Health-Related Quality of Life

Background: Prevalence data about tooth erosion has attracted increasing attention in the dental community; however, no study has addressed the impact of this condition on child oral health-related quality of life (COHRQoL). This study assessed the impact of tooth erosion on COHRQoL. Methods: This study followed a cross-sectional design, with a multistage random sample of 944 11- to 14-year-old children representative of Santa Maria, a southern city in Brazil. They were examined for recording the prevalence and severity of tooth erosion by 2 examiners. Children completed the Brazilian version of Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11–14) and data about socioeconomic variables of the target population were collected by means of a structured questionnaire. The Poisson regression model using robust variance was performed to assess the association between the predictor variables and the outcomes. Results: Prevalence of tooth erosion (7.2%) and severity were low. Poisson regression models showed a distinct gradient in mean CPQ11–14 scores by socioeconomic indicators. Children with tooth erosion with low levels of severity did not report higher means in the total scores or domains of CPQ11–14. Conclusion: The presence of tooth erosion of low severity did not have a significant negative impact on the children’s perception of oral health or on their daily performance.

Antimicrobial action of root canal filling pastes used in deciduous teeth

Purpose: This study assessed the antimicrobial effectiveness of an iodoform-based paste (Guedes-Pinto Paste, GPP) and a paste modified by the addition of a 2% chlorhexidine gluconate gel (CHX) to replace the camphorated parachlorophenol component of the original GPP. Methods: The antimicrobial action was tested against the following microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus oralis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. In the agar diffusion test, 18 Petri plates with 20 mL of BHIA were inoculated with 0.1 mL of the microbial suspensions. Paper disks were immersed in the experimental solutions for 1 min and were then placed over the BHIA surface in each agar plate. The plates were maintained for 1 h at room temperature and then incubated at 37oC for 48 h. The diameters of the microbial inhibition halos were measured around the paper disks containing the substances. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U-test (α=0.05). Results: Antimicrobial action was observed for the GPP and CHX pastes, which presented absence of turbidity for almost all microorganisms. No statistically significant difference in the antimicrobial action was found between GPP and CHX. Conclusion: Both pastes present similar antimicrobial effectiveness against several microorganisms commonly found in endodontic infections in deciduous teeth.
