The objective of this work was to evaluate the population fluctuation of Harmonia axyridis in fruit trees, during two years (2004-2006), to relate it with abiotic variables and to assess its influence on the other predator coccinellids, in Ponta Grossa, PR, Brazil. H. axyridis represented 38% in Coccinellidae. There was significant difference in the relative frequency of the species between the sampling years, which changed from 0.20 to 0.67, from one year to the other. There was positive significative correlation between H. axyridis abundance and mean temperature, in citric plants, and negative significative correlation between H. axyridis abundance and air relative humidity, in noncitric plants. H. axyridis causes negative impact on local ladybugs.

Some aspects of the behavior and biology of Phaedon confinis Klug, 1829 are evaluated on the host plant Senecio brasiliensis (Spreng.) Less. The adult insects were collected in Ponta Grossa (Parana, Brazil) and were kept in an average temperature of 20.03oC. The eggs of P. confinis are elongated and yellowish, with an average total amount of 756.75 ± 50.19 eggs / female with an average of 7.54 ± 0.99 eggs / chutch. The average incubation period was 7.38 ± 0.21 days and the average viability of the eggs were 44.69% ± 7.45. The larva has dark brown coloration, with short bristles distributed on the body and the form was similar in the three larval instars, with size increasing in each ecdisys. The three instars lasted on average 5.81 days, 4.82 days and 21.84 days, respectively; and the average survival reached in the thirth instar was 5.27%. The pupal period presented average duration of 5.58 days and average survival of 3.88%. The average longevity of the females was 229 days and of the males 213.75 days.

The genus Corysles Mulsant, 1850 is revised and illustrations of pertinent characters are provided. Lectotypes are designated for Diazonema fallax Weise, Callanga, Peru and Corystes cavifrons Weise, Turrialba, Costa Rica. Diazonema Weise, 1926 and Corysles (Diazonema) Duverger, 1989, are synonymyzed with Corystes Mulsant, and Diazonema fallax Weise, 1899 Corystes cavifrons Weise, 1926 and Corystes pubescens Weise, 1926 are placed in synonymy of Corysles hypocrita Mulsant, 1850.

Abstract The genus Hinda Mulsant is revised and illustrations of pertinent characters are provided. A new species, Hinda joeli is described. Hyperaspis terminata Gorham, Hyperaspis humerata Mulsant and Hyperaspis decemverrucata Mulsant are new combinations. Hinda guttipennis Weise is transferred to Cyra Mulsant as Cyra guttipennis Weise, new combination. A key to the species is added.

The objective of this work was to compare biological aspects and life table parameters of the coccinellids Harmonia axyridis, Cycloneda sanguinea and Hippodamia convergens. Insects were fed eggs of Anagasta kuehniella, and reared at 24.5±1oC, 70±10% relative humidity, with a 12‑hour photophase. Hippodamia convergens took about 1.6‑day to complete development, longer than H. axyridis, and 2.4‑day longer than C. sanguinea. At immature stages, H. axyridis exhibited the highest survival percentage (49.2%), in comparison to the other coccinellids. For mean adult longevity, H. convergens was deficient, in comparison with the other species. Mean period of pre‑oviposition was the longest in C. sanguinea; the longest oviposition time occurred for H. axyridis; and the post‑oviposition period was similar between the coccinellids. Considering the reproductive parameters, H. axyridis showed the best performance in all aspects. For life table, the values of H. convergens were higher than, although close, to those of H. axyridis. Nevertheless, the high net reproductive rate of H. axyridis showed this species potential to increase population size. The biological characteristics of the exotic H. axyridis favors its invasion and establishment in Brazil, corroborating results noticed in other countries.

This study aimed to obtain information about the fauna composition standards, community structure and Chrysomelidae seasonality in an orchard located in Campos Gerais region of Parana. During the nearly two years of sampling, 3,361 coleopterous were collected, and among these coleopterous, 1,103 belonged to Chrysomelidae family, representing 30.1% of the captured beetles. Eumolpinae and Galerucinae subfamilies showed the biggest species abundance and richness, furthermore, the most representative to the orchard were: Eumolpinae sp. 7 and Eumolpinae sp. 15, Diabrotica speciosa, Iphimeis dives, Spintherophyta semiaurata, Colaspis sp. 1 and Colaspis sp. 2 and Syphrea sp. 1, representing 91.7% of the collected coleopterous. In relation to the fruit trees, it was observed that the biggest insect number was collected on the orange and tangerine trees; orange tree had the biggest species richness index and persimmon tree showed the biggest diversity index. There was a considerable reduction of the Chrysomelidae species on the second annual cycle, and this fact demonstrated that the family has a great temporal variation. Spring was the season with the largest abundance on two years of collection and the meteorological factors did not show any relation to the Chrysomelidae abundance.

Practical activity is a great educational tool that contributes to the process of teaching and learning. In this paper we report the results of a proposed mini-course on entomology for students of MS as well as the production of a handout on the orders of insects, adopting as a technical application of the dichotomous key. 14 students participated, the second year of an agricultural technical college. Data collection was performed by two questionnaires (preschool and after-school), and observations and production of free paragraph. In the 2nd survey, the group had a high percentage of correct answers, and provide more elaborate answers. It was observed that different learning activities contribute to greater understanding and assimilation of scientific content, production of texts on specific topics, arouses curiosity, and complements the content presented in the textbook; dichotomous key is an excellent teaching tool for teaching and basic taxonomic features systematics of living organisms.
