Abstract The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical overview of the product innovation management process and its challenges. Despite wide recognition of the importance of innovation, there is a consensus that management practices that maximize innovation are still not fully understood. Various authors have demonstrated the complexity of the innovation process by showing that it involves a detailed combination of risk and uncertainty and the need for intense multifunctional orchestration to attempt to strike a balance between creation and discipline. Despite advances over the last decade, the literature still lacks studies that bring together contributions from different fields of knowledge into integrated models for systemic management innovation. Based on current bibliography reviews, a model that includes three aspects (process, context and resources) is proposed, and the challenges of innovation are investigated from the perspective of structuration theory. This paper provides a conceptual synthesis and a theoretical framework that can be useful for future research on this topic.

The main objective of this research is to provide a characterization of the knowledge creation process involved in high-tech product development projects with different innovations degrees. As theoretical contribution, this work joins some of the most important approaches of this process in a framework that organizes concepts in four main dimensions. A study of cases done in a company that develops high-tech systems for the industrial automation market is presented investigating three projects in the R&D Division of the company. A comparative analysis of the knowledge creation processes observed in each of these projects is made. The main result is the identification of creative process characteristics that are influenced by the innovation degree.

The need for effective and efficient Product Innovation (PI) is a great challenge for organisations in today’s hypercompetitive global markets. Many research studies addressed problems/obstacles to successful PI from various perspectives. Many other studies proposed factors to help companies mitigate such problems. Here, the primary objective is to propose an integrated model, to empirically test this model, and get insights about which factors, if managed appropriately, will help reduce the obstacles to PI in practice. A questionnaire was developed, pilot tested, and used to collect data from 47 PI managers. The results support the theoretical importance of a formal PI process, characteristics of the company environment, and the availability of specific resources as important factors to reduce obstacles to company PI. Based on the results recommendations are made to practitioners and researchers in this important area.

The aim of this paper is to investigate, through the organizational context, the adoption of management practices for product innovation and the challenges faced by organizations to increase their innovative performance. To this end, the following dimensions are studied: 1) innovation culture, 2) organizational structure and governance for innovation, and 3) relationships with the external environment. The choice of this theme is justified by the fact that organizational contexts that enhance innovative performance are still not fully unraveled, and by the lack of empirical studies that analyze the reality of the practices proposed in the organizational world, especially in Brazil. Modern approaches to innovation are presented as a conceptual basis. These approaches recognize that well-structured processes are not sufficient for innovation to occur, but an environment conducive to innovative activity is also needed. The realization of exploratory qualitative research is conducted through a multiple case study. In this study, the management systems of four enterprises with innovation activity and relevant product development in Brazil are studied. The main results characterize the intra-organizational challenges and indicate high interdependence between organizational context and consistency of processes of innovation, as well as the influence of organizational structure on how initiatives flow through innovation processes.
