Upsilon physics at CESR

Bound states of the heaviest known quark, the b-quark, provides us with a powerful laboratory for testing fundamental ideas in physics. Four 3S1 bb bound states are now known to exist. Their masses and leptonic widths provide crucial information on the dynamics of quark binding. A large body of information has been collected in the past eighteen months at CESR on the four Ys. The Y″ was first resolved, the Y″ was discovered and proved to lie above the open flavor threshold. Finally, the first b-flavored particle, the pseudoscalar B-meson, was discovered by detecting its semileptonic decay. A brief description is given of the two detectors operating at CESR, and of heavy quark bound state phenomenology. Experimental results are presented and discussed in terms of current theoretical ideas.

CP violation in the K system

Abstract CP violation in the K system is pedagogically reviewed. We discuss its manifestations in the neutral K meson systems, in rare K meson decays and of charged K mesons. Results from classical experiments, and perspectives for upcoming experiments are included. We also briefly discuss the possibility of CPT tests.

QUARK SPECTROSCOPY WITH A NEW FLAVOR

Abstract Hydrogen-like bound states of very heavy quark-antiquark pairs discovered in the past few years provide us with new powerful ways to investigate the properties of quarks and their interactions. In particular, the recent direct evidence from CESR for the existence of a new flavored quark (the b quark) and the observation of three bound plus one quasibound bb states, provide us with a unique new spectroscopy with a wealth of hadronic and electromagnetic transitions whose unraveling will greatly refine our understanding of the interquark forces.
