The aim of this research is to study the moderating role of family management in the relationships between the intensity of research and development and the occurrence of continuous technological innovation and between the existence of technological innovation outcomes and long-term firm performance. The results show that family management reduces efficiency in the conversion of research and development expenses into technological innovation outcomes over time. Our findings also suggest that the influence of family management significantly contributes to improving the effect of the achievement of technological innovation on long-term performance.

Design/methodology/approach – A comprehensive literature review based on an in-depth analysis of 59 empirical studies was carried out. Findings – The revision presents an integrative framework, identifying main determinants and dimensions of innovation; and summarizes main research avenues and existing gaps, in order to guide future research. Practical implications – The paper summarizes main research progress concerning innovation in the Family Business worldwide. Consequently, it allows for better decisions by the managers of these firms. Originality/value – The study of innovation in the Family Business has emerged as a prolific research field over recent years, but current knowledge of how these firms innovate is as yet fragmented and incomplete. Consequently, there has been demand for further research concerning this field.

Abstract Understanding the relation between intellectual capital and innovation has become one of the most relevant topics for both academics and practicing managers in the field of innovation management. This paper attempts to advance this theme by empirically investigating the role played by both human and structural capital efficiency as determinants of achieving technological innovation outputs. This study also examines the moderating role of family management on these relationships. In this paper, we use a matched-pairs design and a conditional logistic regression approach to analyse a sample of 5,304 Spanish firms for the period 2000–2013. The results show that both the attracting and recruiting of competent human resources and the ability to develop mechanisms to capture and translate knowledge, expertise, and skills of organisational members and stakeholders are important to achieve technological innovation outputs. Our findings also suggest that family management increases the efficiency of human and structural capital to obtain technological innovation outcomes.

Abstract The analysis of innovation in a family business context has become an emerging topic in literature, but recent studies have resulted in mixed findings. To disentangle these inconclusive results, we propose to analyse the influence of family management on the relationship between different innovation inputs and innovation outputs. In particular, this manuscript empirically investigates whether family management exerts a moderating role on the relationship between R&D intensity, R&D personnel and social capital and the occurrence of technological innovation. To test our hypotheses, we used a conditional logistic regression based on a longitudinal sample of 1027 Spanish manufacturing firms over the period 2006–2010. The results show that family management reduces efficiency in the conversion of R&D expenses into technological innovation outcomes.
