Design and Implementation of a Real-time Education Assistive Technology System Based on Haptic Display to Improve Education Environment of Total Blindness People

Jung-Il Jung; Jinsoo Cho

In this paper, we proposed a real-time education assistive technology system based on haptic display to improve education environment of total blindness people. The proposed system consist of a lecture and writing S/W for educator and a previously developed haptic display H/W for total blindness people. The one has the major function which is quickly and easily writing to the education data, that will be provided to total blindness people, through familiar UI, the other has the major function which print out the tactile information about the education data. The result of implementing system not only provides a similar result using existing braille instrument and printer, but shows that it is effective performance and functionality because it can print out the education data in real time.

Object panorama creation based on a general photographing environment

Qian Zhang; Jung-Il Jung; Jongkil Won; Jinsoo Cho

The existing methods for creating an object panorama generally have limits in creating an object panorama with various models because the latter depends on a special environment where the model can be rotated to take images. In this paper, a method of creating an object panorama by modeling a new panoramic space based on the photographing environment of the camera that observes an object is proposed to overcome the limitations of the existing methods. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, experiments were conducted with huge models, which are commonly difficult to use in creating an object panorama. The results show that the proposed method can effectively create an object panorama in a general photographing environment.

A method for automatically translating print books into electronic Braille books

Taekeun Park; Jung-Il Jung; Jinsoo Cho

In this paper, a method for automatically translating scanned images from print books into electronic Braille books is proposed with the objective of reducing the amount of time and cost required for producing Braille books. The proposed method consists of processes for identifying character and image areas in a scanned image, automatically translating characters and images into Braille and tactile graphics, respectively, and positioning Braille and tactile graphics into an electronic Braille page. Experimental results show that the proposed method drastically reduces the time required to translate a print book into an electronic Braille book. Despite the drastic reduction in translation time, the method proposed in this paper does not compromise the ability to recognize information for the visually impaired compared to manually produced Braille books, demonstrating its feasibility in practical applications. Therefore, the proposed method is expected to significantly reduce the time and cost required for producing Braille books, and provide more reading materials for the visually impaired, making significant contributions to enhancing their knowledge and welfare.

Detailed-information browsing to form centralized mesh structure in region of interest

Jung-Il Jung; Jinsoo Cho

In this paper, we propose detail-information browsing, which can form a mesh structure identical to the original model in only the region of interest(ROI) of a user. The proposed method is based on creating a simple level of detail(LOD) model from a 3D model with the large-scale memory requirements of 3D model rendering. In our method, first of all, we create a hierarchical structure space using segmented 3D data. And we make the LOD model by repeating vertex clustering about a mesh with an inner bounding box. For the next step, we extracted the user ROI in the simple LOD model, and performed rendering for a mesh structure identical to the original model in the user ROI, by detailing the mesh structure of the high-level related extracted region. To evaluate the proposed method, we performed some experiments using large-scale 3D data. In our proposed method, we made the mesh structure identical to the original model in the user ROI. So we can provide the 3D model detail-information to the user ROI. This works by reducing the memory usage by 54% on average by forming a mesh structure identical to the original model in the user ROI based on the simple LOD model.

Method for Generating an Object Panorama based on Trumpet-shape Space Modeling

Jung-Il Jung; Jinsoo Cho

In this paper, we propose a method for generating a realistic object panorama by considering geometric transformations of camera views in a general photographing environment. In the proposed method, we first model a trumpet-shape panorama space based on geometric transformations of camera, such as vertical rotation and horizontal rotation movement around a target model. We then generate an object panorama by mapping model images to the trumpet-shape panorama space. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, experiments were conducted on a large size model, which is quite difficult for us to generate the object panorama without special equipments in general. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively generate an object panorama, which is usually generated in a special photographing environment, regardless of the size of target model.

Detailed-information Browsing Technology based on Level of Detail for 3D Cultural Asset Data

Jung-Il Jung; Jinsoo Cho; Tae-Keun WhangBo

In this paper, we propose the new method that offer detailed-information through relax the system memory limitation about 3D model to user. That method based on making LOD(Level of Detail) model from huge 3D data of structure cultural assets. In our method as transformed AOSP algorithm, first of all it create the hierarchical structure space about 3D data, and create the LOD model by surface simplification. Then it extract the ROI(Region of Interest) of user in simplified LOD model, and then do rendering by original model and same surface detailed-information after process the local detailed in extracted region. To evaluate the proposed method, we have some experiment by using the precise 3D scan data of structure cultural assets. Our method can offer the detailed-information same as exist method, and moreover 45% reduced consumption of memory experimentally by forming mesh structure same as ROI of simplified LOD model. So we can check the huge structure cultural assets particularly in general computer environment.

Automated Silhouette Extraction Method for Generating a Blueprint from 3D Scan Data of Cultural Asset

Jung-Il Jung; Jinsoo Cho; Tae-Keun WhangBo

In this paper, we propose an automated silhouette extraction method that can effectively extract inner-patterns and silhouettes from 3D scan data of cultural asset. First of all, after creating the edge list of 3D vector data, we decide contour edge and crease edge according to viewpoint. In the next step, after extracting surface silhouette by investigating the vector variation of adjacent faces in crease edge, we finally extract the contour silhouette and surface silhouette for generating the blueprint of cultural asset. To evaluate the performance of the proposed silhouette extraction method, we performed experiments of silhouette extraction using a traditional tile model, a car model and a stone monument model. Comparing with the conventional threshold-based silhouette extraction method, the proposed method extracted more distinct and clear surface silhouettes and inner-patterns by effectively removing meaningless edges, such as noise.
