In this paper, a highly efficient modulation code named new eight to fourteen modulation (NEFM) code is proposed. The code efficiency and recording density of NEFM code are improved over the conventional modulation codes. However, its hardware complexity is comparably low. The analytical and experimental results show the effectiveness of NEFM code for high density optical recording. The encoding and decoding algorithms are summarized and the analytical and experimental results are described.
