Application of PCM thermal energy storage system to reduce building energy consumption

The building sector is known to make a large contribution to total energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Phase change materials (PCMs) have been considered for thermal energy storage (TES) in buildings. They can balance out the discrepancies between energy demand and energy supply, which are temporally out of phase. However, traditional PCMs need special latent storage devices or containers to encapsulate the PCM, in order to store and release the latent heat of the PCM. The proper design of TES systems using a PCM requires quantitative information and knowledge about the heat transfer and phase change processes in the PCM. In Korea, radiant floor heating systems, which have traditionally been used in residential buildings, consume approximately 55% of the total residential building energy consumption in heating. This article reviews the development of available latent heat thermal energy storage technologies and discusses PCM application methods for residential building using radiant floor heating systems with the goal of reducing energy consumption.

Building materials thermal conductivity measurement and correlation with heat flow meter, laser flash analysis and TCi

The most important factor in the worldwide problem of global warming is the emission of carbon dioxide. The 23% of carbon dioxide emissions generated by building construction must be reduced. Reduction in thermal conductivity, especially via improved insulation, is the most basic factor for decreasing energy consumption. Therefore, accurate and continuous thermal conductivity measurements are important in saving energy. This study presents methods for investigating thermal conductivity measurement and compares three methods: the heat flow meter, laser flash analysis, and thermal conductivity analyzer.

Thermal Performance of Wooden Building Envelope by Thermal Conductivity of Structural Members

국내에서 주로 사용되고 있는 건물에너지 성능평가 시뮬레이션 마다 상이한 재료의 열전도율로 평가 되고 있음이 파악되었다. 시뮬레이션을 통한 정확한 건물에너지부하를 평가하기 위하여, 각 시뮬레이션에서 목조건축물의 스터드로 사용되고 있는 목재의 열전도율을 확인하고, 이에 따른 벽체의 열관류율과 부재 접합부위에서의 선형열교 차이를 연구하였다. 각 시뮬레이션은 동일 수종에 대해 상이한 열전도율을 채택 후, 각 시뮬레이션에서추출한 열전도율 간의 차이가 가장 상이한 소나무의 열전도율을 스터드에 적용하였다. 시뮬레이션 간 지붕, 벽체, 지면 슬래브의 열관류율 중 최대오차는 0.023 W/m2·K이었으며, 지붕의 서까래 접합부, 지붕-벽체 접합부, 지면슬래브-벽체 접합부 중 최대 선형열교 오차는 0.025 W/m·K이었다. 또한, HEAT2 정상상태전열해석 프로그램을 활용하여 선형열교 및 벽체의 온도변화에 대한 전열해석 이미지를 분석하였다. 구조체에 온도 분포를 선으로 표시하여 단열이 부족한 곳에서는 온도선이 급격하게 변하는 것이 확인되었고, 온도선이 급격하게 변하는 부위에서는 다른 곳보다 온도가 낮으며, 다른 구조체 부분보다 더 많은 열류가 손실됨이 확인되었다.

Preparation of thermal-enhanced epoxy resin adhesive with organic PCM for applying wood flooring

Epoxy resins are well-known materials that show beneficial properties, such as high tensile strength and modulus, good adhesive properties, low cost, and ease of processing and environmental advantages. However, epoxy resin adhesive has no characteristic of thermal storage. Latent heat storage is one of the favorable kinds of thermal energy storage methods considered for energy saving and thermal efficiency in various fields, such as solar air conditioning systems and buildings. So we prepared thermal-enhanced epoxy resin adhesive by using PCM. This paper addresses the effects of n-hexadecane and sodium lauryl sulfate on the thermal properties and chemical properties of epoxy resin adhesive and HEAC, using differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. Also, we evaluated the applicability of composite epoxy resin adhesive to wood-based flooring using n-hexadecane, through measurement of bonding strength from universal testing machine analysis.

Suggestion of Thermal Environment Miniature for Evaluation of Heating Efficiency Based on Thermal Conductivity Measurement Method of Building Materials

Today, global warming is one of main problems all over the world. The cause of the global warming is carbon dioxide outbreak by the rapidly increasing energy use. Therefore, it is necessary to save energy in each industrious field. It was investigated that the half of total energy consumption over the world was used for construction and building. Therefore, the saving of the building energy plays a significant role in decreasing total energy consumption. With the considerable increase in building energy consumption, a green building rating system and certification are required to reduce building energy consumption and emissions. Of various elements reducing building energy, the thermal conductivity of materials affects the energy consumption as a basic element, which is directly related with reducing energy consumption. In particular, as the thermal conductivity of finishing materials is an important factor to decide heating energy efficiency of floor heating system, the investigation and development are necessary.
