Over the past few years, the performance of active safety systems (chassis management, steering, brake control and stability systems) and passive safety systems (seat belts, airbags, headrests and the passenger safety cell) has improved substantially, thanks mainly to electronics. However, since development activities in the two sectors — active and passive safety — have been kept largely separate, significant safety potential still remains untapped.
