Towards a Europeanization of football? Historical phases in the evolution of the UEFA European Football Championship

In the last three decades, the importance of European football has grown considerably, both for national teams and for clubs. Today, European Championships and team competitions such as the UEFA Champions League attract nearly as much attention as the World Cup – even beyond the European continent. This historical overview shows the divergent and heavily disputed origins of Europe‐wide national football competitions and traces the phases of the European tournaments. Particular attention is given to the driving forces and ideas that have influenced this trend. As a key issue, this overview explores how far this trend has led to the ‘Europeanization’ of football.

Freizeitsport – Sport und Bewegung in der Freizeit

Im Kontext der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen in Deutschland nach 1945, aber vor allem seit den 1970er Jahren wurde Sport ein wesentlicher Teil der popularen Alltagskultur und in diesem Zusammenhang verstarkt in einem neuen freizeitsportlichen Bewusstsein praktiziert. Ein eindimensionales Sportmodell scheint vor diesem Hintergrund nicht mehr ausreichend, um sportliche Aktivitaten in der Gesamtheit zu umfassen – die klassische pyramidale Struktur des Sports ist angesichts der heterogenen Sportkultur, der Pluralisierung und Vermischung von Motiven im Sport nicht mehr differenziert genug, um die Bandbreite der Entwicklungen in Sport und Bewegung nachvollziehen zu konnen. Vor diesem Hintergrund thematisiert der Beitrag die „Eigenlogik“ des Bereichs Freizeitsport als einem zentralen Teilbereich der Sportkultur mit eigenen Charakteristiken (quantitativer wie qualitativer Natur). Thematisiert werden Zugange zum Freizeitsport und historische Entwicklungslinien, Pluralitat und Heterogenitat der Motive von Freizeitsportlern, wichtige Auspragungen und Organisationsformen im Alltag, Trendsportarten sowie sportpolitische Perspektiven.

Dies soll den Anlass bieten fur einen Ruckblick auf eine mittlerweile uber 25-jahrige Publikationsperiode des Mitteilungsblatts und fur einen Ausblick auf die Zukunft von Moving the Social

From the first programmatic declarations of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Arbeiterverein (ADAV) until the presence of the Party of European Socialists (PES) confessions on the importance of transnational party cooperation can be considered as a programmatic core principle of social democratic and socialist politics in Europe. However, beyond the general commitment to cooperate the party cooperation of „left“ parties has always been characterized by latent skepticism and by constraints in view of the perspectives of transnational party activities. Despite the European, transnational and international rhetoric statements of „left“ parties their references to national policy objectives and a striving for expediency can be identified. The contribution points out basic features of social democratic and socialist party cooperation in Europe, it illustrates developments and watersheds and it analyses the impact of the European idea in this political spectrum.

Zwischen Individuum und Typus: Die deutschen sozialdemokratischen Abgeordneten des europäischen Parlaments (1952 - 2011) in kollektivbiografischer Perspektive

Engaging with the research method of collective biography the contribution focusses on the German Social Democratic Parliamentarians in the European Parliament. Against the backdrop of social structural variables of the biographies of all 170 parliamentarians in the time period between 1952 and 2011 both collective and individual characteristics of the cohort are empirically regenerated and analysed. Particular attention is given to the question to what extent similarities and differences in the life cycles of the politicians can be identified. Considering research on European integration the article also addresses the question in how far the first direct elections to the European Parliament in 1979 can be considered as a watershed in its composition and in the representation of the people alike.
