Evaluation of mainstream tablet devices for symbol based AAC communication

Jurica Dolić; Jesenka Pibernik; Josip Bota

Rapid evolution of mobile devices enables the todays user to access the content and technology previously reserved for multiple devices in one compact, portable package. The introduction and popularization of smartphones, tablets and e-readers changed the way that the users communicate, consume and create content. This paper examines the potential of using such devices for symbol-based Augmentative and Alternative Communication. We have proposed a model of an adaptive symbol-based AAC application for mainstream mobile devices. In respect of the requirements of the model we have examined technical possibilities and limitations of specialized and mainstream tablet devices available. Via a preliminary research of potential symbol-based AAC users in Croatia we have investigated the current state, needs and requirements regarding the use of digital AAC applications.

An optimized radial basis function model for color characterization of a mobile device display

Ante Poljičak; Jurica Dolić; Jesenka Pibernik

This paper presents an optimized color characterization model based on Radial Basis Functions (RBFs). The performance of the proposed model was tested on a number of different mobile devices and compared with the performance of other state of the art color characterization models. We compared the accuracy of models using the CIELAB color difference. Four different models were discussed in detail: Piecewise Linear Model Assuming Variation in Chromaticity, Polynomial regression, Artificial Neural Network, and proposed Radial Basis Function model. For training and evaluation of the models we measured a large number of color samples on various mobile device displays. Results have shown that our optimized RBF model has superior accuracy over other models with median color difference of 0.39. In addition, it has particularly good accuracy for colors on the boundary of device’s gamut with maximum color difference of 0.87, where other models shown unacceptably high (>10) color difference.

Influence of UV Varnish Pattern Effect on Print Quality

Jurica Dolić; Jesenka Pibernik; Igor Majnarić

This article aims to define attributes of image quality that affect the quality of textured UV varnish applied as a pattern effect over offset prints. The most common UV varnishing problems that might influence attributes of print quality are reticulation of the varnish, poor adhesion, spreading of the varnish and shade changes. These problems mostly arise from inability to control the coating, especially if applied on differently generated print surfaces. Benefits of UV coatings in terms of image quality improvements might be greater opacity, color stability, deeper and more vibrant colors, sharper graphics, higher gloss and uniform surface to give labels a more vibrant look. Image quality variation assessment often needs to be carried out since an improvement made to one attribute can result in a deficiency to another attribute or attributes. In order to determine correlations between these attributes, a combination of objective and subjective image quality assessments has been applied.

What is creativity in web portfolio design

Jesenka Pibernik; Jurica Dolić; Bojan Kanizaj

Abstract The article analyses the creativity in a particular category of interactive products—personal portfolio websites. Most of the designers embraced the advantages of a digital portfolio which include the ability to make an unlimited number of copies at a very low price, availability through email and presence on the global job market. In trying to impress possible employers, designers often got more concerned with following advices offered by web design agencies on the web today rather than focusing on the quality of user experience. The question is can the rules of good web portfolio design be defined and/or can they be perceived as a process of creating new choices out of a prevailing set of options? The goal of this article is to provide an overview of work in this area and analyses it to speculate on what makes web portfolio creative as a narrative interactive product.
