Development and validation of a solar-assisted heat pump using ice slurry as a latent storage material

Justin Tamasauskas; Michel Poirier; Radu Zmeureanu; Martin Kegel; Roberto Sunye

This article presents the development of a novel solar heat pump system using ice slurry as a latent storage material. First, the proposed system integration into a high-performance building is introduced and discussed from an operations perspective. Then, a test bench of the proposed concept is developed and used to validate a detailed simulation model. The validated simulation model is then integrated with energy models of single-family homes in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver to assess the potential of the system across Canada. Results demonstrate annual heating and hot water energy savings of over 60% in all three regions.
