Yi Wei Weng; Jyh Dong Lin; Wei Hsing Huang; Ming Chin Yeh

This study utilized mechanical calculation method and finite element method ABAQUS software to analyze the mechanical response of different flexible pavement material combinations on steel deck. Heavy vehicle load with high axle load and high tire pressure were considered, so as to know the reasons for steel deck pavement distress, and to define the arrangement principle for steel deck pavement and the combination of materials suitable for flexible pavement. The results show that the fatigue damage of steel deck pavement coincides with traditional theory, the maximum tensile strain at the bottom of surface course is still the determination index, and the fatigue crack is presented mainly in four types; the maximum compressive strain on the top of steel plate is the determination index of rutting damage, the major cause for rut is the surface course under compressive strain in the wheel load position. The suitable material for steel deck one-course pavement is full depth Guss asphalt mix; the suitable combination for steel deck two-course pavement is modified asphalt mix on top and Guss asphalt mix at bottom.

This study examines construction waste generation and management in Taiwan. We verify the factors probable affecting the output of construction wastes by using data for the output of declared construction wastes produced from demolition projects in Taiwan in the last year, expert interviews, and research achievements in the past, and find “ on-site separation” is the factor with effects on the output of construction wastes via cross-correlation by algorithms such as K-Means and Decision Tree C5.0. It can be seen that the output (0.092(t/M3) with on-site separation or 0.329(t/M3) without on-site separation is highly correlated with the composition ratio of construction wastes and referred to as a valid conclusion.

Chih Chung Yang; Jyh Dong Lin; Hsiang Wei Chiang; Wei Ting Lin; Chia Jung Tsai

The pore distribution in cement mortar, which is highly related to compressive strength and permeability, vary with water-cement ratios and curing periods. This study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to observe the pore distribution. Compressive strength tests, the rapid chloride-ion permeability test, and electrical resistivity tests were performed to determine the influence of pore distribution on durability. The results reveal that lower water-cement ratios and longer curing periods contributes to fewer pores in mortar specimens. SEM images illustrated how this may be influenced by the rate at which the hydration product, C-S-H colloids, is generated. In addition, the results of durability testing indicate that porosity and compressive strength, total charge passed, and resistivity display linear relationships, as porosity increases, the total charge passed increases, resistivity decreases, and compressive strength declines. The linear regression determined that the R2 of all relationships exceeded 0.90, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of applying MRI to assess the durability of concrete.

Establishment of Pavement Information Decision Management Platform via Cloud Computing Technology

Chih Chung Yang; Jyh Dong Lin

With the time progress and constant promotion of information technology, the living quality of people is improved relative to economic development and people constantly demand the government to improve service effectiveness. In order to save manpower and material resources, it is an inevitable trend for road authorities to develop pavement management system of government electronization. However, the existing pavement management systems at home mainly comprise basic investigation data on road condition, current situation analysis and suggestion of maintenance threshold, road maintenance priority decision analysis and other management purposes, so as to promote the efficiency and quality of pavement management operation. While, most of the systems have the disadvantages of different maintenance planning decision making approaches, insufficient project construction history data, chaotic use of drawings, too little available knowledge, failure to integrate information and so on, so it is unable to establish an effective system to assist engineers as the control function, which causes a major obstacle relative to the development of pavement management system. The loss of pavement engineering history data with time would cause difficulty in data collection for future pavement analysis. Therefore, how to resolve the above problems becomes a major assistance for the future pavement maintenance knowledge decision management. The study establishes cloud computing pavement information decision management platform in the form of implementation via Google public cloud computing, validates the feasibility through practical cases, utilizes cloud drive real-time data processing, electronic document management, graphical pavement information and figuration management analysis through the software provided by Google, improves the budget for control efficiency and enhances the promotion of pavement management system, so as to accord with the study objective.

The Study of HDM-4 Applied in Taiwan Area National Freeway Maintenance and Management

Yung Lin Chen; Jyh Dong Lin

Taiwan Highway System experiences successively investment of few decades in government. After the first national highway-Chung Shan, the Second national highway, twelve west to east freeway and western seaside freeway go to operation, the road network is gradually complete. The road engineering changes the style from new construction to maintenance management. In recent years, because the government public construction budget reduce year by year, so road agencies should be emphasizing facilities management and enhancing construction performance that keeping highway transits service quality with the constraints of budget limitations. World Bank carries on a series of project researches to the road in 1968 and develops the related evaluation module. In HDM-4, it provides the extensive module application and explicit method in the stages such as planning, programming, preparation and operation etc. It provides a reference that road agencies carry on related decision. HDM-4 provide user to adjusting with different region parameter such as weather, environment...etc. So this tool can be applicable to more widespread region. When the related pavement maintenance systems are not satisfactory, how to use the international identify tool help Taiwans highway maintenance management. It is very interesting and workable research. We use HDM-4 to collect and analyze Guan-Xi regions Highway No.3 network data, traffic characteristic and cost related information. Through this knowledge, we can adjust the HDM-4s parameter to suit Taiwans condition. Besides, we review technical literature and experts experience to determine on maintenance alternates. We use adjusted mode with real highway budget to determine the threshold of routine and period maintenance. Considering maintenance cost, user cost and highway economy to decide suitable threshold. Finally, base on the best maintenance strategies to explain the relation between maintenance budget and performance. Base on this result, we can determine the budget allotting criteria to reach the biggest economy benefit of the resource.

Jyh Dong Lin; Chia Tse Hung; Chien Ta Chen

In recent years, pavement engineering has gradually moved from new construction work to maintenance and management. However, effective real-time management by road regulatory authorities of all kinds of situations and distress that can affect pavement is a problem. At present, road regulatory authorities are subject to self-management mechanisms, however there are differences in resources for all unit levels and scales. This study utilizes a pavement management database in which statistical data has been stored that may change due to timing, environment, etc. As a result, spatial processing and the time factor are taken into account to develop a database of spatiotemporal objects and 3D Geo-Information. Finally we can provide useful pavement information and ways to improve system diversity. Keywords: spatial-temporal databases, pavement management system

Analysis of the Relationship between Porous Pavement Thickness and Water Film Quantification

Jyh Dong Lin; Ming Chin Yeh; Chia Tse Hung; Chin Rung Chiou

This research mainly uses the image binaryzation to quantify water fog in order to have a better understanding about the water fog degree that drainage pavement reduces and the relationship between drainage pavement thickness and water fog. By observing the water fog that tires splash while raining, the study result shows that the most adequate pavement thickness of drainage pavement is 4cm. The water fog it reduces is double of 2.5cm drainage pavement. The thicker drainage pavement is also considered safer to drivers. About the drainage path, the shorter the faster it can drain off the rainwater and reduces the water fog degree that heavy vehicles splash.

Jyh Dong Lin; Chia Tse Hung; Shih Huang Chen; Ming Chin Yeh

The benefit using BOF slag on Perpetual Pavement that has been developed in United States and Europe recently, will effectively increasing Rutting and Skid Resistance of Pavement, reducing the amount of asphalt that used on Mix Design that will reduce the overall construction cost. The character of BOF slag has higher density and Hydrophilic, this study applied it to porous pavement. It compared with the performance of traditional aggregates. Based on the result, there are no significant differences. The BOF slag will be expansion with water, it was bad in pavement construction. Through swelling pressure test, the BOF slag with new process is no significant change in water. So, BOF slag is suitable in porous pavement.
