A calculation of the electrostatic potential field for a compensated, open-endcap, cylindrical-type Penning trap is presented. Sufficient detail is given so that various parts of the calculation can be easily modified as needed. The effects of finite-length endcaps and of a non-negligibly sized gap between the electrodes are explicitly included. It is shown that inclusion of a realistic gap has a significant effect on the calculated electrostatic field.

Abstract A large-acceptance Bragg curve spectrometer with a longitudinal electron collection field and a segmented anode has been constructed and tested. The effects on the charge resolution of the entrance angle and entrance position of the incident particle have been studied. Simulations have been done in order to isolate the contribution to the overall detector performance of the signal-shaping electronics from that of the intrinsic design of the detector.
