Diabetes morbidity in a sociologically defined group of the general public (Master bakers of a city)

These s tudies regard ing the m o r b i d i t y of d iabe tes a n d subcl inical d iabe tes are p a r t of an inves t iga t ion carr ied ou t on a sociological ly defined group of the genera l publ ic pa r t i cu l a r l y l iable to develop diabetes , i.e. se l f -employed bakers of a c i ty [1]. Of 496 members of the bakers guild, 75.6% were i nves t i ga t ed b y glucose to le rance tes t s (oral glucose bu t ton in decades of male subjec ts of the c i ty resu l ted in a cor rec ted percen tage of 7 .3% for mani fes t and 9 .7% for subcl inical d iabetes . 81.6% of al l bakers were found to have a no rma l c a r b o h y d r a t e tolerance. As expected , mani fes t d iabe tes increases wi th advanc ing age, reaching a m a x i m u m in the 6 th and 7th decades. The group of bakers wi th subcl inical d iabe tes was found to be similar. Cases wi th in the lower borderl ine l imi t w i th s l ight i m p a i r m e n t of c a r b o h y d r a t e tolerance a m o u n t e d to ~ of the group ; no regular dis tr i bu t ion in the age decades can be noted .
