During the last decade the co-management concept has gained increasing acceptance as a potential way forward to improve fisheries management performance. It has, however, at the same time become increasingly evident that the co-management concept is not clearly defined and means very different things to different people. In this article, we attempt to document experience available from a recent study on fisheries co-management that has researched case studies of various implementations of co-management arrangements in coastal and freshwater fisheries in South East Asia and Southern Africa, and to present a more comprehensive understanding of co-management and to summarise the experiences with both the positive outcomes and the problems in actual implementation.

Fishing skill is perceived to play a crucial role in catching fish. The question arises for fishery managers as to whether or not there are observable and measurable attributes of the skipper or vessel that can be monitored and regulated to account for skipper skill and, hence, this source of fishing capacity. Equating technical efficiency with skipper skill, this paper evaluates technical efficiency and skipper skill in the Kedah, Malaysia, trawl fishery to address this issue.

A test of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) for carbon emission and potential of renewable energy to reduce green house gases (GHG) in Malaysia

Abid Rashid Gill; K. Kuperan Viswanathan; Sallahuddin Hassan

This study investigates the presence of environmental kuznets curve (EKC) for green house gases (GHG) measured by CO2 emission in Malaysia for the period 1970 to 2011. The study also examines the potential of the renewable source of energy to contain GHG. The long-run significant positive coefficient of GDP indicates that the GHG are increasing with economic growth while the insignificant coefficient on GDP square rejects the EKC transition. These results indicate a high GDP level for the EKC turning point for Malaysia. Therefore, it can be stated that only economic growth cannot reverse the environmental degradation in Malaysia. The government should have to come up with some policy measures to achieve CO2 emission reduction targets that Malaysia has pledged to achieve in Paris Submit (2015). The renewable energy production is found to have significant negative effect on CO2 emission. So government should focus on the renewable source of energy production and should frame a special policy for renewable energy production.

Effects of Project-Related and Organizational-Related Factors on Five Dimensions of Project Performance: A Study Across the Construction Sectors in Malaysia

Gopal Sekar; K. Kuperan Viswanathan; Murali Sambasivan

Abstract The objective of this research is to analyze the relationships of project-related and organizational-related factors with five dimensions of project performance across different sectors of the construction industry. Data collected from the project managers and directors of 360 construction firms in Malaysia were analyzed using multiple-regression technique with size of the organization as a control variable. The important finding is that the effects of project-related and organizational-related factors differ by sector type and by dimensions of project performance. The findings of this study can help project managers devise and implement appropriate strategies to support project success.
