Crystals of a new nonlinear optical (NLO) material, viz., L-asparagine-L-tartaric acid (LALT) (1) were grown by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution containing equimolar concentrations of L-asparagine and L-tartaric acid. The structure of the title compound which crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P2(1) consists of a molecule of L-asparagine and a molecule of free l-tartaric acid both of which are interlinked by three varieties of H-bonding interactions namely O-H···O, N-H···O and C-H···O. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum of 1 reveals its transparent nature while the vibrational spectra confirm the presence of the functional groups in 1. The thermal stability and second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of 1 were investigated.

A new nonlinear optical organic compound, namely, L-histidinium 2-nitrobenzoate (abbreviated as LH2NB (I); ([C6H10N3O2]+ [C7H4NO4]−)), was synthesized. The molecular structure of LH2NB (I) was elucidated using single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of this compound is about two times that of the standard potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals.

The crystal growth of D-(-)-alanine (1), a non-centrosymmetric solid is reported. It was characterized by NMR, infrared, Raman, UV-Vis-NIR and CD spectra. Experimental vibrational frequencies are compared with theoretically calculated values. Second harmonic generation (SHG) and first hyperpolarizability measurements are reported.

Single crystals of the organic non-linear optical materials L-threonine (I) and L-prolinium tartrate (II) were grown using a home-made crystal growth setup (MKN setup). The grown crystals were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Infrared (IR), UV-vis-NIR and Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Measurements of Vickers microhardness, laser damage threshold (LDT) values and second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies are reported. Thermal and dielectric studies were also carried out.

Bulk size single crystal of N-acetyl DL-methionine (C7H13NO3S) (1) was grown using a home-made crystal growth setup (MKN setup). The identity of the grown crystal was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The modes of vibrations of the functional groups present were assigned using the infrared (IR) spectrum. UV-vis-NIR spectra showed that the crystals have excellent transparency in the visible and infrared regions. The thermal stability and decomposition of the sample was studied by using thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). Photoluminescence excitation studies showed that the emission occurred at 350 nm for the compound.
