Synthesis of Ba2YZrO6: A new phase in YBa2Cu3O7 ZrO2 system and its suitability as a substrate material for YBCO films

Abstract Addition of zirconia into YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 has resulted in the formation of a second phase which has been identified as Ba 2 YZrO 6 , a new compound having a cubic structure with lattice parameter a = 8.44 A. The compound Ba 2 YZrO 6 has been prepared as a single phase material from its oxide mixtures by solid state reaction method. Sintering conditions of the material have been optimised. The chemical reaction between YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 and Ba 2 YZrO 6 was studied on a 1 : 1 molar mixture of the two compounds by heating at 950°C for 10 to 15h. It is found that there is no observable reaction between YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 and Ba 2 YZrO 6 . The dielectric properties were also studied. Ba 2 YZrO 6 is suggested as a good substrate material for the deposition of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 films.

Effect of beryllia substitution and addition in a YBa2Cu3O7−δ compound

The effect of BeO substitution and addition in the superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconductors has been investigated by temperature resistance measurements and x‐ray diffraction studies. The results revealed that the substitution or addition of BeO in YBa2Cu3O7−δ does not have much detrimental effect on the superconducting properties. Because of this nonpoisoning behavior, beryllia is suggested as a suitable substrate material for the production of superconducting thin films.
