Abstract A sampling total absorption counter (STAC) is described, which consists of a sandwich of iron and scintillator plates. It permits the energy determination of neutrons or other strongly interacting particles with energies above 3 GeV. The optimization of the energy resolution and other properties of the counter are reported. At 24 GeV/ c an energy resolution of ± 11% was achieved.

Abstract The t -dependence of the differential cross-section for elastic neutron-proton charge exchange scattering has been measured at 8, 19.2 and 24 GeV/ c . The extremely narrow peak in the forward direction, previously observed for momenta up to 8 GeV/ c , presists at the higher momenta, and the t -dependence shows practically no change with energy. Approximate values of the absolute cross-section were also determined for these momenta.

Abstract The total neutron cross-sections were measured with high precision for hydrogen and deuterium. At an average neutron momentum of 10 GeV/c we obtained σ T (np)=39.5±0.5 mb and σ T (nd)=73.3±1.1 mb. These values are in excellent agreement with p-p and p-d total cross sections. No energy dependence was found for n-p cross section between 4 and 10 GeV/c.

Abstract The differential cross-section for the elastic neutron-proton-scattering has been measured for neutron energies between 4 and 16 GeV and | t | from 0.3 to 1.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results can be fitted by exp( A + Bt ), where B increases slightly with energy indicating shrinkage. The values of B for n−p scattering are in good agreement with the corresponding data for p−p scattering.

Abstract Total cross-sections for neutrons on Be, C, Al, Cu and Pb have been measured to an accuracy of about 1% at average neutron momenta of 8, 11, 14 and 21 GeV/ c . For all elements they drop smoothly 1 by about 3% between 8 and 21 GeV/ c , and have a momentum dependence similar to the pp and np total 1 cross-sections. Indeed if the cross-sections are normalized to the np total cross-section, no momentum dependence can be observed. The data are compared with calculations based on the Glauber model.

Abstract Total neutron cross-sections were determined for He, Li, Be, C, Al, Fe, Cu and Pb at an average neutron momentum of 10 GeV/ c . The results agree very well with total proton-neuclei cross-sections at 20 GeV/ c . The interaction radii inferred from the cross-sections are in remarkable agreement with the half-density radii as obtained from electron scattering.

Abstract Neutron-proton total cross-sections were measured in the momentum range from 8 GeV/ c to 21 GeV/ c with an accuracy of better than 2% using a 0 o neutron beam at the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The np total cross-section drops from 39.7 mb at 8 GeV/ c at 21 GeV/ c , and thus follows closely the pp total cross-sections in this momentum interval.

Abstract We present data on inclusive neutron spectra produced in an internal Be target of the CERN PS, for incident proton momenta between 8 and 24 GeV/ c at 0°, and for an incident proton momentum of 19 GeV/ c at 50 mrad.

Abstract The differential cross sections for neutron-proton charge-exchange scattering have been measured with high statistics in the region of momentum transfer squared 0.002 t | ⩽ 0.400 (GeV/ c ) 2 and for incident neutron momenta 9 p ⩽ 23 GeV/ c .
