Palladium chloride and tetraphenylphosphonium bromide intercalated clay as a new catalyst for the Heck reaction

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker; Per J. Liesen

Abstract A new modified clay material, prepared by intercalating palladium chloride and tetraphenylphosphonium bromide into montmorillonite K10 clay, catalyzes the Heck reaction and affords trans -stilbenes in high yields.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1999

Solvent-free synthesis of amides from non-enolizable esters and amines using microwave irradiation

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker

An efficient solid state synthesis of amides is described from non-enolizable esters and amines using potassium tert-butoxide under microwave irradiation conditions.

Can ultrasound substitute for a phase-transfer catalyst? Triphase catalysis and sonochemical acceleration in nucleophilic substitution of alkyl halides and α-tosyloxyketones: synthesis of alkyl azides and α-azidoketones

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker; Dalip Kumar

Alkyl halides and α-tosyloxyketones afford the corresponding azide derivatives upon treatment with aqueous sodium azide under triphase catalysis or ultrasound irradiation conditions. The use of surfactant pillared clay materials and sonochemistry has been compared and demonstrated in these nucleophilic substitution reactions. It appears that the use of a two-phase system in conjunction with ultrasound irradiation is the method of choice that precludes the need for a catalyst in such reactions.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1998

Selective nitration of styrenes with clayfen and clayan: A solvent-free synthesis of β-nitrostyrenes

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker; Per J. Liesen

Abstract A facile solvent-free synthesis of β-nitrostyrenes is described from styrene and its substituted derivatives using inexpensive ‘doped’ clay reagents, clayfen and clayan.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1998

MICROWAVE-ACCELERATED CROSSED CANNIZZARO REACTION USING BARIUM HYDROXIDE UNDER SOLVENT-FREE CONDITIONS

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker; Per J. Liesen

Abstract A solventless and expeditious method for the preparation of alcohols is described from aldehydes using barium hydroxide, Ba(OH)2.8H2O, and paraformaldehyde. A comparison of this microwave-accelerated Cannizzaro reaction to the one under conventional heating mode is also reported.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1998

SURFACTANT PILLARED CLAYS IN PHASE TRANSFER CATALYSIS : A NEW ROUTE TO ALKYL AZIDES FROM ALKYL BROMIDES AND SODIUM AZIDE

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker

Abstract A high yield synthesis of alkyl azides is described from readily accessible alkyl bromides and sodium azide using an inexpensive phase transfer catalyst, surfactant pillared clay.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1999

PALLADIUM CHLORIDE/TETRAPHENYLPHOSPHONIUM BROMIDE INTERCALATED CLAY : NEW CATALYST FOR CROSS-COUPLING OF ARYL HALIDES WITH ARYLBORONIC ACIDS

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker

Abstract A facile method for the preparation of biaryl compounds is described from readily accessible aryl halides and arylboronic acids using palladium chloride/tetraphenylphosphonium bromide intercalated clay as a new catalyst.

Green Chemistry | 1999

Synthesis of allylbenzenes. by cross-coupling of allyl bromide with arylboronic acids using a palladium chloride and tetraphenylphosphonium bromide intercalated clay catalyst

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker

A facile route for the synthesis of allylbenzenes is described from easily accessible allyl bromide and arylboronic acids using a new reusable catalyst system, palladium chloride and tetraphenylphosphonium bromide intercalated clay.

Ultrasound Accelerated Permanganate Oxidation: An Improved Procedure for the Synthesis of 1,2-Cis diols from Olefins

Rajender S. Varma; Kannan P. Naicker

A simple and expeditious method for the preparation of 1,2-cis diols is described from olefins using an inexpensive oxidant potassium permanganate, KMnO4, via sonochemical activation in aqueous media.
