&NA; The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the quality of interventions using mobile health (mHealth) technology being developed for and trialed with HIV‐infected African American (AA) women. We aimed to assess rigor and to ascertain if these interventions have been expanded to include the broad domain of self‐management. After an extensive search using the PRISMA approach and reviewing 450 records (411 published studies and 39 ongoing trials at clinicaltrials.gov), we found little completed research that tested mHealth HIV self‐management interventions for AA women. At clinicaltrials.gov, we found several mHealth HIV intervention studies designed for women in general, forecasting a promising future. However, most studies were exploratory in nature and focused on a single narrow outcome, such as medication adherence. Given that cultural adaptation is the key to successfully implementing any effective self‐management intervention, culturally relevant, gender‐specific mHealth interventions focusing on HIV‐infected AA women are warranted for the future.

Improving Reading Comprehension through Holistic Intervening and Tutoring During After-School with High Risk Minority Elementary School Students

Kaprea F. Johnson; Abha Gupta; Hana Rosen; Howard Rosen

The current study took a quasi-experimental approach investigating the effect of a holistic after-school intervention, on reading comprehension measured by the Gray Oral Reading Test (GORT)-4 on at-risk students in Grade 2 through Grade 5. Analysis of Variance was used to investigate the relationship between pre- and post-intervention scores. The study showed encouraging results. The 91 student participants showed gains in their GORT-4 total scores after the intervention. Results of after-school tutoring lend support to the use of peer-tutoring in afterschool in the elementary schools. Due to the exploratory nature of the study in a single school, there are constraints on generalizability and utility of findings to other schools across the board.

The Utilization of Technological Innovations to Support College Student Mental Health: Mobile Health Communication

Kaprea F. Johnson; Michael T. Kalkbrenner

ABSTRACT The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the use of mobile health (mHealth) for communicating wellness-related resources and mental health interventions to college students. An extensive review was conducted of electronic databases and the annual reviews from randomly selected college counseling centers across the United States. Results revealed that mHealth is a promising resource for infusing technology into the delivery of mental health support services. Recommendations for integrating mHealth into the delivery of mental health support services on college campuses are provided.

Interprofessionalism in the Literature: A Review of the American Journal of Health Research

Michael T. Kalkbrenner; Jewel Goodman Shepherd; Kaprea F. Johnson; Jill D. Choudhury; Alyssa Reiter; Alexandria Russell

The purpose of this research brief was to review the available research on collaborative efforts to delivering healthcare in a health research journal. Interprofessional collaboration involves an interdisciplinary working relationship between health care providers to provide multifaceted treatment approaches to better serve clients, better educate students, and more effectively engage professionals. Interprofessional collaborations have been found to provide clients with a higher level of care. Communication about health related information among family members has also been found to promote higher levels of patient care. A search was conducted in the American Journal of Health Research (AJHR) using search terms related to interprofessional collaboration and familial collaboration. Findings indicated that there were benefits to collaborations among professionals and among family members. Results, however, yielded limited publications (n = 3) that were related to interprofessional and familial collaborations in AJHR. Recommendations for future research on interprofessional and familial collaborations are discussed in this research brief.
