There have been many letters recently about the RCN changing its stance on assisted dying. There are, however, many that make totally unsubstantiated, emotive comments and include false logic.

The proposed amendment to the Coroners and Justice Bill (news July 15) did not seek to legalise any form of assisted dying. It was an attempt to end the legal threat to those accompanying people who are going abroad to die. That no one has been prosecuted, despite prominent public breaches, speaks eloquently about the existing legislation.

Baroness Emerton is right in that the governments End of Life Care Strategy for England is a significant step forward (reflections September 17). All terminally ill people must have access to high quality care at the end of their lives.
