The speciesInoceramus frechi (Bivalvia, Cretaceous); its characteristics, formal status, and stratigraphical position

KurzfassungIn der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die paläontologischen Merkmale, der formale Status und die biostratigraphische Stellung der Inoceramen-ArtInoceramus frechi diskutiert. Auf Grund von Material von der Friedrichsgrunder Lehne (Sudeten) wurde die Art erstmalig 1905 vonFlegel beschrieben. Auf Grund eines Einzelfundes wurde die genannte Form auch von Hockenau aus der Löwenberger Kreide erwähnt. Eine genauere Beschreibung oder auch Abbildung dieses Exemplares wurde vonFlegel nicht gegeben. Das Originalmaterial vonFlegel ist nicht erhalten. Neue Aufsammlungen von der Friedrichsgrunder Lehne erlauben keine exakte Zuordnung, da die Originalbeschreibung vonI. frechi unzulänglich ist. Das ursprüngliche Konzept vonFlegel kann lediglich von der Beschreibung und Abbildung gegeben werden, dieScupin (1912–13) publiziert hatte und die seinerzeit mit dem Originalmaterial vonFlegel verglichen wurde. In der heutigen Literatur wird dieses Exemplar vonScupin als der Lectotypus angesehen. Dieses Exemplar ist aber nicht Bestandteil der Typus-Serie vonFlegel und kann nach den Regeln der Zoologischen Nomenklatur daher nicht als Lectotypus angesehen werden. Aus Gründen der nomenklatorischen Stabilität sollte dieses Exemplar aber als Neotypus vonInoceramus frechiFlegel (=Scupin 1912–13: Taf. 11, Fig. 10) anerkannt werden.Das Exemplar vonInoceramus frechiFlegel, nach der Auffassung vonAndert (1911: Taf. 1, Fig. 8) vom Turon/Coniac-Grenzbereich von Sonnenberg bei Waltersdorf im Zittauer Gebirge, ist einer gesonderten Art zuzurechnen, die vonHeinz (1930) erstmalig alsI. stillei var.scupini bezeichnet wurde.AbstractThe palaeontological characteristics, formal Status and biostratigraphy of the Cretaceous inoceramid bivalveInoceramus frechi are discussed. The species was described byFlegel (1905) on material from Friedrichsgrunder Lehne (Sudetes), and a single specimen was also mentioned from Hokkenau (Polish: Czaple), Löwenberger Kreide (North Sudetic Trough) without any illustration or reference to an illustration. The original material is no longer preserved, the original description of the species is inadequate, and new collections from the type locality, i.e. Friedrichsgrunder Lehne, do not allow the concept of the species to be redefined. The original concept ofFlegel may be indirectly inferred from the specimen ofScupin (1912–13) from Hockenau which was compared by the latter author with the original from that locality mentioned byFlegel, and which was commonly regarded as the lectotype ofFlegel’s species in the subsequent literature. This specimen is not a part of the type series ofInoceramus frechiFlegel and thus has no formal right to be regarded as its lectotype. For reasons of nomenclatorial stability, however, it is proposed here to retain the speciesI. frechiFlegel, with the original ofI. frechiFlegel inScupin (1912–13: pl. 11, fig. 10) designated here as the neotype ofFlegel’s species.The specimen from the topmost Turonian/?lowermost Coniacian of Sonnenberg near Waltersdorf (Saxony, Germany) representingAndert’s (1911) concept ofI. frechiFlegel is a separate species and is referred here toMytiloides scupini (Heinz).
