This paper presents air interface capacity simulations for VoIP (voice-over-IP) over 3GPP Release 7 high speed packet access (HSPA) networks. The results show that 3GPP HSPA is able to provide VoIP spectral efficiency which is higher than the spectral efficiency for circuit switched voice calls with the same end-to-end quality. The high VoIP efficiency can be attributed to the packet optimization features in 3GPP Release 5, 6 and 7 specifications, to the advanced mobile receiver algorithms and to the VoIP optimized radio network algorithms. The studies also show that HSPA mobility solutions fulfil VoIP requirements with synchronous handover even if HSDPA does not use soft handover

In this paper, the system level optimization of the voice over IP transmission in the HSUPA system, configured with a 10 ms TTI length, is analyzed. The study considers the release 7 improvements to HSUPA, in terms of the DPCCH gating concept. A dynamic activated MAC layer bundling of two VoIP packets in a single frame is proposed and compared against the single packet per frame transmission by means of quasi-static system level simulations.

This paper presents the main advantages and challenges that the introduction of millimeter-wave mobile access brings to the forthcoming 5G system architecture, focusing on the expected impact of that technology on standards and regulation bodies. The EU-funded project MiWaveS is taken as a concrete example for the standardization impact.

In this paper, evaluation of HSPA radio technology is provided with the reference to IMT-Advanced requirements. Recent technological advancements are included to verify if HSPA is capable of meeting these requirements. Extensive system-level simulation campaigns are carried out, which shadow IMT-A performance evaluation guidelines and suggested test environments specifications. Respective results are analyzed in the context of spectral efficiency, VoIP capacity and high speed mobility of IMT-A requirements. The presented results indicate that although a single strongly interference-limited environment is unlikely to pass stringent IMT-A spectral efficiency criteria, overall all the IMT-A test requirements are passed.

In this paper, we present an enhanced VoIP scheduling for the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) in UMTS, which takes the age of the VoIP packet into account. The downlink capacity can be significantly improved by this way, especially for shorter uplink transmission delay. In order to quantify the achievable performance improvement, we present results obtained from extensive system-level uplink and downlink simulations. Inter alia, it is shown that using the proposed scheme can lead to an increase in the downlink cell capacity of up to 16%. By applying the proposed method, the downlink performance can be improved considerably while the uplink performance remains the same, which ensures the good end-to-end performance.

This paper proposes a strategy, described via a process, which can help collaborative research projects impact standards and engage with regulatory bodies. The process is being successfully used by a running EU-funded project that is taken as a concrete example of how to link in a proper way innovation and pre-development activities to standards. The proposed methodology has a general validity and can be adopted by any other research project, working on new enabling technologies far ahead from market launch, aiming at the broadest possible deployment of such technologies and willing to impact effectively both the research and the industry ecosystems.
