I was delighted to have been recently elected as Chair of the RCN Practice Nurses Association (PNA) following Sue Nutbrowns decision to stand down after 5 years in the role. Sue has worked extremely hard during those years for the benefit of our profession and will be a hard act to follow. I am, however, looking forward to the challenge, am committed to the development of nursing in general practice and primary care and believe that the PNA has an important role to play in raising the profile of practice nursing.

The programme for the forthcoming national Practice Nurse Conference (30 June–2 July) is promising to be thoughtprovoking and stimulating. It is packed with a range of topical political and clinical issues that we expect will appeal to all interests. Practice nurse conferences are renowned for their social events and the choices on the first evening include a night at the theatre, wine tasting or a Caribbean evening with a steel band playing in the awesome shadow of Winchester Cathedral. The conference reception and gala dinner on the second evening will be held at the elegant Avington Park.
