The Golden Age of the Celtic Aristocracy in the Fourth and Third Centuries BC

The greatest period of Celtic expansion occurred between the fourth and third centuries BC, with the conquest of new territories on the margins of the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. Historians often underemphasize this period: while the barbarian raids and the rise of mercenary service in the fourth century BC are stressed, colonization is neglected. In addition, Celtic society at that time was radically different from those found in coeval Mediterranean cultures. Imports from the south were much less common than in previous centuries, and attempts at urbanization were abandoned. Celtic society became distinctly rural, with its craft industries, settlement, and sanctuaries dispersed throughout the countryside. Although there were local variations, art and religion assumed original and consistent characteristics. Celtic society was composed of peasants and warriors and dominated by large aristocratic families.

3.2. Les potins du mont Beuvray

Ungefahr 1300 Munzen sind bisher aufdem Mt. Beuvray gefunden worden, teils bei den Ausgrabungen von Bulliot und Dechelette, teils seit Wiederaufnahme der Grabungen 1984. Die Altfunde befinden sich im Musee des Antiquites Nationales von St. Germain-en-Laye, im Musee Rolin in Autun und zu einem geringem Teil im Cabinet des Medailles der Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris ; die Munzen aus den neuen Untersuchungen liegen noch im Depot von Glux-en-Glenne. Auβerhalb dieser ersten statistischen Ubersicht bleiben die 300 Potinmunzen im Musee Rolin und ein Teil der Funde der Kampagne 1992, die noch zu bestimmen sind. Die Anteile der Munzmetalle geben am Mt. Beuvray folgendes Bild wieder : 62 % Potin, 20 % Bronze, 16 % Silber und 2 % Billon. Der Anteil von Munzen aus Silber, denen Kupfer beigemischt ist, durfte betrachtlich hoher sein, kann aber ohne Analysen nicht ermittelt werden. Bemerkenswert ist das Fehlen von Haduer-Munzen aus Gold oder Elektrum. Potinmunzen « a la grosse tete » bilden die groβte Gruppe. Sieben Serien von Potinmunzen sind mit jeweils mehr als 20 Exemplaren vertreten. Die Bearbeitung der archaologischen Zusammenhange und der Fundstucke ist im Gange. Es scheint, daβ sich stratigraphisch verschiedene Fazies unterscheiden lassen.
