Ms. Irena Križman has been a member of the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) Executive Committee and served as the IAOS President between 2009 and 2011. She began her career and interest in official statistics in what was then Yugoslavia’s Republic of Slovenia, and now is the independent country of Slovenia, in the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS).2 She has a B.Sc. in sociology from the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Social Science (1975) and an M.S. in Management of Non-Profit Organizations also from the University of Ljubljana.

Ms. Nancy McBeth has been a member of the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) Executive Committee for the last six years and currently is the Advisor to the IAOS President. She began her career and interest in official statistics in her native country of New Zealand, where she spent over 25 years at Statistics New Zealand. There, Nancy undertook a number of operational and senior management roles with Statistics New Zealand; including leadership of the 2006 New Zealand Census. Following the 2006 New Zealand Census, she served as a technical advisor to the Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi (SCAD). Currently Nancy is a Consultant with the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (“GCC Stat”), based in Muscat, Oman. Her particular responsibility and interest as a consultant has been on population censuses.

In this Conversation conducted with Monica Dashen and Rachel Green we learn about their experiences on a volunteer project with Statistics without Borders (SwB) in Haiti during the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew (October 2016). The project focused on conducting a nationwide household survey to confirm aid distribution and quantify the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew (five-weeks later). In this small-scale survey, SwB explored the following topics (a) aid distribution, (b) impact of Matthew, and (c) health issues. Only 18% of the people have received aid. The results of the study indicate that aid distribution, a thorny issue, needs to be given still more thought.2

Fritz Scheuren stepped down from his position of Editor-in-Chief to the Statistical Journal of the IAOS after the March 2016 issue. To thank him for his service and stepping in to the role of Editor-in-Chief at a critical time, the IAOS Executive Committee members requested that we include in our Oral History series, an interview with Fritz Scheuren. There was an earlier interview with him in the September 2011 issue of Amstat News [16].2 This new interview will expand on that piece and bring out more of his views on family, statistics, and life in general.
