SummaryPoly(sodium alkyl 2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropyl phosphate)s as polysoap induced the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene in the absence of an added radical initiator in water at 80°C. The polysoap having a C14 alkyl group showed the highest activity of all tested groups. The generalized initiation mechanism of the spontaneous polymerization in which the micellar aggregation state participates is discussed.

Utilization of Monodisperse Polymer Particles as Spacer Particles for Liquid Crystal Display.

液晶層の均一性を左右するスべ一サとして, 単分散性が高い高分子微粒子を応用した報告例はない. 本研究では, 促進拡散シード重合法 (ADシード重合法) により得られた単分散ポリマービーズを微小圧縮試験機を用いてその粒子1個の圧縮挙動を測定した. この荷重一変位の関係から, スべーサ1個の強度を示す指標となる10%圧縮弾性率を定義するとともに, 粒子径分布, 圧縮弾性率または, 散布個数を考慮した系でスべーサ粒子とパネルのセル厚との関係についてシミュレーションを行った. その結果, 1) 単分散性が高いスペーサほどビーズ散布個数の変動に対してもセル厚の乱れが少ない, 2) 圧縮弾性率が高く粒子径分布が狭いスペーサほど優れたセル厚の均一性を発揮することが確認できた. さらに, これらの結果と実際のパネル組立後の評価結果とが良い一致を示した.
