This paper describes the development of a robust feedback controller for the torque-converter-clutch slip control system mounted in the Toyota A245E automatic trans-axle. H/sup /spl infin// control theory was applied as a systematic design method in order to ensure robust stability against large variation in characteristics under vehicle operating conditions and variation in friction characteristics of the clutch induced by aging deterioration. This theory enables a detailed design in the frequency domain. As a result, the control system achieves high levels of response and reliability, which contribute to a large-scale reduction of fuel consumption.

ON-LINE DESIGN METHOD OF FEEDBACK CONTROLLER FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

Abstract This paper presents a new design method, which reduces the developing and design time for a feedback controller in various automotive electronic control systems. To achieve this problem, “On-line Design Method” hasbeen developed, which first acquires data and sets up a model at the same timeusing onboard ECU so that it can next output the controller directly, by representing the characteristics of thecontrolled system with only two parameters. The new method has been applied to Automatic Transmission lock-up clutch slip control system, and realized over 50% reduction of design time as compared with the conventional method.
