High C/N Recording in Sb2Se3/Bi Write-Once Disk

The read-out signal in an alloying disk, which has a large phase difference of the reflection coefficient between nonrecorded and recorded states, was analyzed by taking into account the effects of grooves. It was found that the read-out signal can be enhanced by interference between light reflected from a groove and recording media. A 60-dB CN (carrier-to-noise) ratio was obtained by applying this idea to the Sb2Se3/Bi alloying disk. NTSC (National Television System Committee) direct FM signal recording was confirmed by using this disk. It can be read by a modified Laser Disc player system.

In-line double gap thin film head for the electronic still camera system

Masaki Yamada; Masakatsu Saito; Michiyori Miura; K. Tanaka; Katsuo Konishi; S. Okada

An in-line double gap head ( IDG head ) has been developed for the electronic still camera system. Excellent performance of the IDG heads can be achieved. The cross-talk level is about -45 dB and the carrier to noise ratio ( C/N ) is about 60 dB, which is at least +3 dB better than that of conventional ferrite heads. The IDG heads can record on metal powder media with gap depth as large as 10 µm, resulting in high tolerance of wear ( the wear life is 1000-5000 hours ).
