REDESCRIPTION OF CTENOCHELES BALSSI KISHINOUYE, 1926, WITH COMMENTS ON ITS SYSTEMATIC POSITION AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW SUBFAMILY GOURRETIINAE (DECAPODA, CALLIANASSIDAE)

Katsushi Sakai

Ctenocheles balssi Kishinouye, 1926 is redescribed. This species is the type of the genus Ctenocheles, the type genus of the family Ctenochelidae. The Ctenochelidae are reduced to the rank of a subfamily of the Callianassidae. The genera Gourretia and Dawsonius should be included in a new subfamily, Gourretiinae.

[Two species of the genus Eiconaxius, E. indicus (De Man, 1907) and E. hakuhou n.sp., and one species of the genus Spongiaxius, S. brucei Sakai, 1986 were collected from the Sulu Sea, Philippines. One species of Eiconaxius, E. farreae Ortmann, 1891 has been found in Sagami Bay, and a new species of the genus Ambiaxius, A. surugaensis n.sp. was collected from Suruga Bay, both in Japan. The family Eiconaxiidae n.fam. is established for the genus Eiconaxius Bate, 1888. The generic name Briancaris is proposed as a replacement for Callistocaris Kensley, 1989, a synonym of Ambiaxius sensu Kensley, 2000 [not Ambiaxius Sakai & De Saint Laurent, 1989] in the family Calocarididae Ortmann, 1891. Es wird vorgeschlagen, in der Familie Calocarididae Ortmann, 1891 den Gattungsnamen Callistocaris Kensley, 1989, einem Synonym von Ambiaxius sensu Kensley, 2000 [nicht Ambiaxius Sakai & De Saint Laurent, 1989], durch den Gattungsnamen Briancaris zu ersetzen., Two species of the genus Eiconaxius, E. indicus (De Man, 1907) and E. hakuhou n.sp., and one species of the genus Spongiaxius, S. brucei Sakai, 1986 were collected from the Sulu Sea, Philippines. A new genus, Kiictenocheloides gen. nov., in the family Ctenocheloidae Sakai, 2011 (superfamily Callianassoidea Dana, 1852) (Decapoda, Pleocyemata)

Katsushi Sakai

Recently, a new species of the genus Ctenocheloides Anker, 2010, viz., Ctenocheloides nomurai Komai, 2013, was reported from the Kii District (= Arita Bay, Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture), Japan. However, Komai’s species is not to be included in Anker’s genus Ctenocheloides, because of differences at the generic level with the type species of that genus, Ctenocheloides attenboroughi Anker, 2010, and is thus reclassified herein under a new genus, Kiictenocheloides gen. nov. Both genera, Ctenocheloides Anker, 2010 and Kiictenocheloides gen. nov. are also different from Ctenocheles Kishinouye, 1926, the type genus of the family Ctenochelidae Manning & Felder, 1991, so that the two genera, Ctenocheloides Anker, 2010 and Kiictenocheloides gen. nov. are now included in the family Ctenocheloidae Sakai, 2011.

A review of the genus Eriocheir De Haan, 1835 and related genera, with the description of a new genus and a new species (Brachyura, Grapsoidea, Varunidae)

Katsushi Sakai

Mitten crabs (Brachyura, Varunidae, Varuninae) are currently classified into six species belonging to three genera: Eriocheir De Haan, 1835, Neoeriocheir T. Sakai, 1983, and Platyeriocheir Ng, Guo & Ng, 1999, i.e., Eriocheir japonica (De Haan, 1835), E. hepuensis Dai, 1991, E. ogasawaraensis Komai, Yamasaki, Kobayashi, Yamamoto & Watanabe, 2006, and E. sinensis H. Milne Edwards, 1853; Neoeriocheir leptognatha (Rathbun, 1913); and Platyeriocheir formosa (Chan, Hung & Yu, 1995). The results of the present study, however, indicate a reclassification into four genera including one new genus, together lodging seven species, including one new species, and with an eighth currently nameless species remaining as a species inquirenda, as follows: Eriocheir De Haan, 1835, with E. japonica (De Haan, 1835) and E. ogasawaraensis Komai et al., 2006; Paraeriocheir gen. nov., with P. hepuensis (Dai, 1991) and P. sinensis (H. Milne Edwards, 1853); Platyeriocheir Ng et al., 1999, with P. formosa (Chan et al., 1995) and P. guangdonga sp. nov.; and Neoeriocheir T. Sakai, 1983, with N. leptognatha (Rathbun, 1913); under the prevailing circumstances, the species now indicated as Eriocheir sp. [= Eriocheir recta sensu Stimpson, 1858] is to be considered a species inquirenda.
