A luminance pattern analyzer, a device utilizing industrial TV techniques, has been developed to make it possible to indicate luminance distribution instantly. In this device, luminance pattern images are displayed in different grades of white, gray, and black on the monitor TV screen and relative luminance pattern areas and the average luminance are measured.

Recently the development of aircraft ground movement control system in airport has become an important problem. In this paper, the lighting system of taxiway centerline lights to give a good visual guidance to a pilot is described. The following results are obtained:(1) Fundamental data, i.e. pilot eye heights, cockpit vision angles, lane curvatures, background luminances and low visibility conditions are summarized and classified.(2) Experiments have been carried out with the artificial fog chamber equipment to ostain the visibility relation between a green light and affecting factors. The illumination range required at a pilot eye position is established as a result.(3) Fitting arrangement methods to give a satisfactory visual guidance to a pilot are studied, and arrangement system on taxiways is decided.(4) Proposed light distributions fittings for cat. II and cat. IIIA are shown by theoretical studies to assure the effective visibility under various conditions.

Based on the experimental studies of luminance preferences, this paper made an attempt to evaluate luminance distributions of the visual field in office environments.A full-sized experimental room was mocked up where the luminance of ceiling and face-wall could be changed continuously while keeping constant the luminance of working plane. Various brightness patterns were assessed by six observers using the method of categarical judgement. From this experiment, the lower limits of luminance for ceiling and face-wall with respect to the working plane were estimated. These luminance limits were applied to evaluate the calculated luminance ratios among main surfaces in a typical office under 14 different illuminating conditions. According to the results, the use of the recessed fluorescent luminairs with clear prismatic panel or with plastic louver showed a tendency to make the interior gloomy because of the insufficient incident flux to the ceiling and the wall surfaces.

The luminance of road surfaces is an important factor in ratings for street lighting, and can not be calculated unless the reflection properties of road surfaces are measured. This report describes the results of experiment in the reflection properties and the luminance of road surfaces, and a simple method for calculating their luminance. In the measurment of the reflection properties, several samples of road surfaces (5×5×3 cm) were used. Finally the luminance distribution of the road surface in the case of a single side arrangment was calculated, and then its result was studied in a perspective view of the road to provide more effective ratings.
