The liver function of 86 patients with liver impairment admitted in our hospital were studied retrospectively regarding before and after the antibiotic chemotherapy. The improvement of the liver function was observed in 24 cases,’ including 18 of the biliary tract diseases, the deterioration in 18, and no remarkable changes in 44 cases. In the deteriorated cases, one was given erythromycin estolate and another case triacetyl oleandomycin. In the most of the deteriorated cases, the cause of deterioration could not be justified whether the underlying disease or the antibiotic treatment. And it was suggested that there was no specific correlation between the deterioration of liver function which was impaired previously and the sort of the antibiotics, administered period and total doses in this series.

The biotransformation of cephalothin(CET) and rifampicin(RFP) in the animals and the patients with and without liver impairment was studied by the thin layer chromatography (TLC) and bioautogra-phy. The transformation (CET to desacetyl CET, RFP to desacetyl RFP) decreased in the damaged liver by CCl4 injection of animals (rat and guinea pig) in vitro and in vivo. But there was no significant difference in the ratio of antibiotics to its metabolite in the urine of the patients with and without liver impairment. From these results, it is supposed that the antibiotics metabolizing activity in the liver of the patients with liver impairment may be decreased, but there may be the compensation by the other organ. And it may be speculated that there are considerable variations of the antibiotics metabolizing activities according to the nature and the stages of the liver diseases.
